This important AL East series is up for grabs with two All-Star hurlers on the hill.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

Tampa Bay picked up a 10-5 road victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.  The Rays have won three of their last four games against the Yankees in the Bronx, after losing six straight here.  The win improved the club’s record to 55-35 on the season and moved them to within two games of first place.  “It was a good day, we needed this win today and I was fortunate enough to get some big hits and score some runs,” Reid Brignac said.  Tampa Bay is now 23-11 against divisional foes this season (+1,020) and have won 13 of its last 16 games on the road against the AL East.  The Rays also took a 4-3 season series lead over the Bronx Bombers heading into the series finale this afternoon.

The Yankees veteran starter is seemingly pitching for a spot on the All-Star roster and leading his team to victory.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto picked up a 6-1 extra-innings victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The Blue Jays streak of games without a home run was pushed to five games, as the team leads the majors with 115 home runs.  The six-run outburst was a relief to fans based on the team scoring just 1.8 runs per game during its five-game losing streak. Toronto’s pitching staff has been doing a tremendous job against the league’s second-best offense this year, posting a 1.55 ERA in four games against the Bronx Bombers.  A victory in game two of this series will be hard to come by, with the team producing a 7-13 record against left-handed starters (-560).  These struggles are nothing new due to the club’s 49-64 mark against southpaws the last three years (-2,020).

I am impressed to the point of being shocked by the start that Brandon Jennings has gotten off to. In three games for a reasonably crappy Bucks team the point guard has averaged 22 points, .3 assists, and four boards. I have only seen him play part of one game, but he looked the furthest thing from a rookie point guard. The game I saw them play was against Chicago. I am a huge Derrick Rose guy – couldn’t be a bigger believer. That being said, Jennings flat out outplayed him in the game. I was very skeptical of Jennings ‘ decision to play in Europe instead of college, and the reports coming out of Europe weren’t universally great, but early indications are that he could be a serious draft steal. The downside to his early strong play in my mind is that it further legitimizes his decision to skip college and turn pro in Europe. If it continues to turn out so well for him then other players will surely follow, and that will only hurt college basketball. I’d obviously rather not have that happen.
