New York Jets WR Plaxico Burress is becoming a major force offensively

New York travels to the nation’s capital to face the Washington Redskins and will play three consecutive games against NFC East opponents.  The Jets snapped a two-game losing streak in tallying a 28-24 win over the Buffalo Bills last week as 9.5-point home favorites.  “We have to keep improving, there’s no question,” commented Jets head coach Rex Ryan.  “We’re not going to win and we’re not going to reach our goal if we don’t get better.”  The franchise will be seeking just its second win in 10 meetings against the Redskins, dropping a 23-20 contest in the last game in the series as 3.5-point home underdogs.  New York is 2-5 ATS as a favorite this year and the ‘over’ is 4-3 in that situation.

The Jets are carried by a defense that ranks eighth in the league in giving up just 318.7 yards per game, while the offense has shown signs of coming around, but averages just 314.8 yards per game.  New York quarterback Mark Sanchez hasn’t been very consistent this year, completing 48.6 percent of his passes last week for 180 yards.  Wide receiver Plaxico Burress has become a major force on the outside, coming away with 11 receptions and two touchdowns over the last three games.

Washington snapped a six-game losing streak by walking away with a 23-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks as three-point road underdogs last week.  Quarterback Rex Grossman has taken over the controls the last three weeks, completing 26-of-35 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.  He also threw two interceptions, adding to the team’s total of 18 that’s tied for the most in the league.  “He’s our starter, for sure,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan stated.  Washington is 17-14 ATS as an underdog the last two-plus years.

The Redskins are relying on rookie running back Roy Helu in the backfield, rushing for a career-high 108 yards and a touchdown, while also grabbing seven passes out of the backfield for 54 yards.  Grossman will need to find wide receiver Jabar Gaffney or tight end Fred Davis down field, as top target Santana Moss will be stuck on Revis Island.  Moss returned for the first time since suffering a broken left hand last week, catching four passes for 29 yards.

Bettors will likely back the Jets due to their 10-4 ATS mark versus teams with a losing record, while the Redskins are 8-17-2 ATS in their last 27 home games.
