Position Needs for San Francisco
Defensive Tackle: If the 49ers plan on switching to the 3-4 they will need a stout run stuffer to occupy blockers in the middle of the field. This guy isn't here, draft him.
Linebacker: Probably a couple linebackers (inside and outside) will be drafted in the early rounds. With the 3-4 this could be also a quick defense end and 1 linebacker depending on the player. Just has to be someone quick that can pressure the QB from the outside. Again this guy isn't currently on the roster.
Cornerback: Nate Clements signing was huge for this team, but depth would be nice to see.
Draft Outlook for the San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers and Mike Nolan made drastic improvements from the previous years 6 combined wins eclipsing that in one season with a 7-9 campaign. The team played hard every week and Alex Smith showed improvement while Frank Gore established himself as one of the leagues best running backs. With that being said the defense was still a liability. Luckily San Francisco has the benefit of drafting 8 players in the first 3 rounds of the draft due to trades and comp picks
In the offseason they helped themselves by nabbing Buffalo corner Nate Clements. With the secondary improved most of the work will be done on front 7.
With the 11th pick look for San Francisco to target Michigan defense tackle Alan Branch or Louisville's Amobi Okoye. Either if on the board would fit perfect in the 49ers new defensive scheme. In the second Purdue defensive end Anthony Spencer and linebacker David Harris (Michigan) and Job Beason (Miami) look like solid choices.
Than it is 6 picks over the next 2 rounds, adding depth to the defense front 7 will be key, but some picks will be spent on offensive line play and maybe a wideout.
