Position Needs for Pittsburgh
Linebacker: Joey Porter was cut and signed with the Miami Dolphins. The rest of the roster is filled with little depth at this all important position. The Steelers need to grab a dominant outside linebacker on day 1 that can rush the passer.
Offensive Tackle: Max Starks and Marvel Smith are weak on the right side of the line. With center Jeff Hartlings retiring, center could also be a concern, but assuring up the left side could shelter the green center play.
Cornerback: Deshea Townsend has lost a step while Ike Taylor the teams number 1 corner was benched for poor play midseason. In case one of these 2 don't bounce back drafting a corner in the third sounds like a logical move for the Steelers.
Draft Outlook for the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers built a superbowl team and their current nucleolus of players through the draft rather than free agency and trades. In the offseason Pittsburgh has made very few moves most of those insignificant and will need the draft to reload and regain the playoff magic Big Ben and the terrible towels shared in the 2005 season.
The most important need and it looks to be filled early in round 1 will be grabbing a linebacker that can rush the passer. Florida State's do all linebacker Lawrence Timmons figures to be a perfect fit for the Steelers system.
In the second round look for them to be on the lookout for a cornerback or some offensive line help. Tennessee's Arron Sears or Texas' Justin Blalock would bring immediate help the deteriorating line. If they went CB in round 2, a couple kids out of the Mountain West conference (UNLV's Eric Wright and Utah's Eric Weddle) could provide insurance for an uncertain defensive back corps. Look for a punter and offensive guard drafted on day 2.
