Participants/Overview: The 2009 Mid American Conference Tournament invites all twelve teams from the conference. Kent State, Buffalo, Ball State, Ohio, C. Michigan, Miami Ohio, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Bowling Green, W. Michigan, E. Michigan and Akron will all be competing for the automatic bid in the 2009 big dance.
This is one of the conference tournaments we preview every year and normally have very little idea on who is going to win. Last year Kent State made it easy on us as they were clearly far and away the best team in the conference but more often than not the Mid American conference Tournament is a crap shoot. This year should be no different.
This season we have a tale of 2 divisions. The East Division features some pretty good teams like Miami Ohio, last years Champ Kent State, Buffalo, and the number 1 seed Bowling Green. The West Division on the other hand is dreadful. There wasn't one team that finished with a winning conference record or winning overall record for the year. So realistically the winner should likely come from the East Division.
Is there anyone from the West that can win it? Ball State has realistically the best shot, not because they are the best team, but because they have a bye and the best draw. Buffalo would likely be favored and give them trouble but this is the MAC and stranger things have happened.
In our power ratings all these teams are within a point of one another, the 4 seed Miami Ohio Redhawks are rated the highest and have the best coach in the conference so we have to predict them as the favorite. They have the worst draw of all the top seeds having to play the 5, the 1, and either the 2 or the 3 to win the title, but dont underestimate what Charlie Coles is capable of putting together.
The one thing we know for sure is this is a one bid league, no at-large's will be handed out so it is win or get in.

Last Years Winner
Kent State. The Kent State Golden Flashes won the 2008 MAC tournament for the second time in 3 years. After surviving a 49-47 scare in the semifinals against the defending champion Miami Ohio Redhawks, the #1 seeded Golden Flashes didn't let up and cruised to a 74-55 win in the finals against the number 3 seeded Akron Zips. This was a familiar feeling for the Zips who the year before lost to Miami Ohio in the finals.
