2008 Mid American Conference Basketball Tournament

Printable & Viewable Bracket Link: 2008 MAC Conference Mens Basketball Tournament Bracket

Participants/Overview: The 2008 Mid American Conference Tournament invites all twelve teams from the conference. Kent State, Buffalo, Ball State, Ohio, C. Michigan, Miami Ohio, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Bowling Green, W. Michigan, E. Michigan and Akron will all be competing for the automatic bid in the 2008 big dance.

Kent State is the only team from the conference that has a good enough resume to earn an at-large bid on March 16th. With an RPI in the 30s and non conference wins over Illinois State (tournament team), George Mason, and Saint Marys (tournament team), the Golden Eagles shouldn't have to sweat a loss in the MAC conference tournament.

The MAC conference season has shown us that the league as a whole isn't as bad as we thought going into the season. After Kent State there isn't a lot separating the other Mid American schools from top to bottom. Dont be shocked to see the tournament not play out to seeding form. Expect to see some upsets along the way and Kent State in the finals.

It was a cinderella run as the Miami Ohio Redhawks knocked off the #1 seeded Toledo Rockets 58-53 in the semifinals and than beat the #2 seeded Akron Zips 53-52 in true march madness fashion to earn the automatic bid into the 2007 NCAA tournament.

The Redhawks were down 7 points at the break but fought back in the second to get things close. With less than 10 seconds remaining, Akron's Cedrick Middleton missed a free throw, Miami O took the ball down the floor and Doug Penno banked in a 3 pointer with less than a second on the clock. The shot was riddled with controversy and caused a 12 minute delay while officials reviewed the shot to make sure Penno got it off in time. Eventually they called it good and put 1 second back on the clock. After an arrant inbounds pass and the Zips prayer went unanswered, Miami Ohio had crushed the hopes of Akron.

Miami Ohio was rewarded with a 14 seed and a matchup against the Pac Ten's Oregon Ducks in the first round of the tourney. It was a tough game throughout as Miami O went toe to toe with the Ducks proving they were NCAA tournament worthy. In the end Oregon squeaked out a 58-56 win and covered the spread. The Redhawks ended the season with a very impressive stat, as the only team in the nation not to surrender more than 70 points once all season.
