Coach: Mark Richt (9th year at Georgia)
Team Name: Bulldogs
2008 Overall Record: 10-3
Returning Starters: 15
Last season, the 16th rated Georgia Bulldogs (10- 3 overall, 6- 2 SEC) finished second in the SEC East and went on to the Capital One Bowl where they defeated number 19 Michigan State 24- 12. The Bulldogs, who have averaged 10 wins per season for the past five years and won four of five bowl games in that same time, look ready to be a top-25 team once again.
The Georgia offense, which last season averaged 31.5 PPG, will miss top performers QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno. Senior QB Joe Cox (15 ATT, 11 COMP, 0 INT, 2 TDs) has smarts and refined skills and should be the starter. If he does not work out, there are two talented frosh on board who could see action. Sophomore wideout A.J. Green (56 REC, 963YDs, 8 TDs) starts for a second year, while senior receiver Michael Moore (29 REC, 451 YDs, 2 TDs) will get a chance at the other starting spot. Two guys will switch off at TB—sophomores Caleb King (61 ATT, 247 YDs, 1 TD) and Richard Samuel (26 ATT, 133 YDs, 1 TD). The offensive line looks to be stable and an asset.
The defense held opponents to 24.5 PPG in 2008, earning a ranking of 59th. They were 27th versus the rush and 32nd against the pass. Last season, tackle Jeff Owens was injured in the first game and knocked out for the rest of the year. He’s back and that should bolster a line that didn’t put much pressure on quarterbacks last season. The linebacking corps is led by junior WLB Rennie Curran (115 TKLs, 3 SKs, 7 TFL). This group is deep and experienced but is in need of another standout performer. Junior strong safety Reshad Jones (76 TKLs, 2.5 TFL, 5 INTs) is back as the team’s top pick artist. He’s a tough hitter but needs to be more consistent and make fewer mistakes. Corner Price Miller (50 TKLs, 1 SK, 1 TFL), a senior, is the other returning starter in the secondary.
On special teams, Georgia needs consistency in the kicking corps. For high school All-American Blair Walsh (50- 50 ExtPts, 15- 23 FG) was fine on extra points but lacked accuracy in key situations on field goals. A season of experience may prove the be the difference maker this year. Drew Butler will replace Brian Mimbs at punter. Prince Miller averaged a hefty 21.2 yards per punt return and Richard Samuel was good for 21.1 per kick returns.
Head coach Mark Richt (82- 22 in eight years with Georgia) may have lost some skilled and experienced players but there’s plenty of talent to go around. Last season, the Bulldogs lost to Alabama, Florida and non-conference foe Georgia Tech. This season, they play a tough schedule that starts with Oklahoma State (September 5) on the road and the home opener on September 12 versus South Carolina. This Bulldog club will finish second in the East and attend a middle tier bowl game.
