Coach: David Cutcliffe (2nd year at Duke)
Team Name: Blue Devils
2008 Overall Record: 4-8
Returning Starters: 11

The Duke Blue Devils (4- 8 overall, 1- 7 ACC Coastal) were dead last amongst all conference clubs. The Blue Devils have not been to a bowl game in 15 years and by the end of this season the string of bowless Decembers and Januaries will stay intact. Even with a fairly light non-conference schedule, Duke will find it impossible to win more than five games.

The Blue Devils were 101st in the nation when it came to putting points on the scoreboard as they averaged 20.1 PPG. Last season, QB Thaddeus Lewis (361 ATT, 224 COMP, 2,171 YDs, 6 INTs, 15 TDs) showed improvement as he upped his completion rate by almost 7% and threw four less picks. This year, the senior looks to have his best season yet. Lewis has garnered a lot of experience and has developed into a sound decision maker. Sophomore Johnny Williams (30 REC, 327 YDs, O TDs) returns as the only starter on the receiving corps. Running back Re’quan Boyette is back after missing 2008 with a knee injury. He should help a running game that was ranked 103rd in the country. Only two starters are back on the offensive line, which is undersized. Whether or not they can gel will determine vastly if Duke can finally score points.

In 2008, the defense held opponents to 23.4 PPG, which was a massive improvement over last season when they allowed 33.2. They also caused 26 turnovers, eight more than the previous season. With just three starters returning to the squad, there’s going to be a whole lot of fast learning going on. Defensive tackle Vince Oghobaase returns as the top sack man with six takedowns. He’ll need to be the glue of the D-line. The linebacking unit will miss Mike Tauiliili and his 140 tackles. He was the primary player on “D” that inspired that entire side of the ball. Senior Vincent Rey (109 tackles, 61 solo) will be asked to play that role. He is capable. The corners and safeties are questionable with just one starter, SS Catron Ganiey, coming back.

Kicker Nick Maggio, who is back, hit 11 of 14 field goals and all 28 extra points, making him a real asset. The season prior, Duke was 3-of-11 on field goals. The return guys are solid. Leon Wright will runback punts and Donovan Varner kickoffs. The punting game is a work-in-progress.

David Cutcliffe (4- 8 in one year at Duke), who has been coaching college ball for eight seasons, starts his second year with the Blue Devils. On the recruitment front, Cutcliffe scored points as he managed to secure the talents of running back Desmond Scott and defensive tackle John Drew. Scott was supposed to go to Rutgers and Drew to Georgia Tech. Although they alone won’t be enough to turn things around, they will certainly help. Richmond on September 5 and Army the following week are both potential wins. Duke could score an upset over a complacent North Carolina team on November 7. They’ll be an interesting team to watch, finishing last in the Coastal Division.
