These tournaments are a grind, as teams except those who have a first round buy will be playing everyday until they lose. For example, when Syracuse won the National Championship three years ago they did not have a first-round buy in their conference tournament. Connecticut did. Syracuse played some tough, hard fought battles and were simply out of gas when they faced UCONN in the Championship game. Connecticut, the more rested team had more energy to expend in the second half and Syracuse couldn’t counter because of exhaustion. It goes to show you just how much that day of rest means in this type of tournament because obviously, Syracuse was the better team. They did win the National Championship.

So beware of teams late in the tournament that are playing more rested teams. You also have got to consider the depth of each team while handicapping these games. A deep team has a much better chance of withstanding the grind of a conference tournament and will be a much better bet. Teams that lack depth will be exhausted by the semi-finals or finals. The last thing to consider is to take a look at what type of games the teams have played thus far in the tournament. Have they been hard fought battles down to the final minute or have they been cake walks? Teams that play tough game after tough game will wear down. If you take these three things into consideration, you have a better shot at beating the books while betting on conference tournaments.
