Coach: Frank Spaziani (1st year at Boston College)
Team Name: Eagles
2008 Overall Record: 9-5
Returning Starters: 14
The Boston College Eagles (9- 5 overall, 5- 3 ACC Atlantic) tied for first in the ACC Atlantic with the FSU Seminoles. In the post season, they lost the ACC Championship game to Virginia Tech 12- 30 and then travelled to the Music City Bowl where they met and lost to Vanderbilt 14- 16. The Eagles went into the post season with a four-game winning streak. B.C. lost head coach Jeff Jagodzinski, who had led them to two straight ACC titles, at the end of last season when Jagodzinski was dismissed for going on an interview for the head coaching job with the Jets. Frank Spaziani, who was the defensive coordinator for the Eagles for a decade, replaced Jagodzinski for one game, which the team won. Spaziani is back for his first full season behind the helm.
Who will be the B.C. QB? That is the big question. Whoever it is will have precious little experience and will need to have a steep learning curve. Sophomore Dominique Davis (138 ATT, 63 COMP, 741 YDs, 4 INTs, 6 TDs), who started three games last season, is the leading candidate. The frontline offers some sound chops, with four starters back, including most of the middle. The running game will be led by dynamic tailback Montel Harris (179 ATT, 900 YDs, 5 TDs) who averaged 5.0 YPC. Senior wideouts Rich Gunnell (49 REC, 551 YDs, 4 TDs) and Justin Jarvis (25 REC, 274 YDs, 3 TDs) are both prime targets.
Defensively, the Eagles were able to stuff the run, ranking seventh nationally versus the rush and defend against the pass, earning a rating of 18th in that area. They were fifth in the country in total yards per game allowed (268.1) and 17th in points allowed (18.4). The linebacking unit includes two seniors and is anchored by the stellar play of Mark Herzlich (110 tackles, 81 solo). Herzlich, who has great quickness, also was tops in picks with 6. The other returning senior LB, Mike McLaughlin, led the club in sacks with four and had 89 tackles. However, McLaughlin may not be back due to a torn Achilles. The backfield offers depth and talent but the frontline is overall inexperienced and a question mark.
Special teams include the topnotch work of center Jack Geiser, who is as reliable as one can be. The kicking game, both punting and placekicking, needs more distance. Last season as a freshman punter Ryan Quigley averaged just 39.6 YPP while field goal kicker Steve Aponavicius, who was 14-for-21, did not hit a kick longer than 36 yards. The club is in need of an effective punt return man.
Spaziani (1- 0 at Boston College) certainly has his work cut out for him. A new starting quarterback, an inexperienced D-line and kickers whose strong suit is not the long ball are all major challenges. Luckily, the Eagles play their first two games versus Northeastern and Kent State, neither of which are major threats. The October 24 contest against Notre Dame is major this season. Notre Dame is improved, but the Eagles have a six-game winning streak on the line versus the Irish. Late in the season, they meet North Carolina. The Tar Heels have proven to be a tough team for the Eagles to beat. The Eagles could finish behind Maryland and out of bowl contention.
