Vandy is Fine and Dandy

The unranked Vanderbilt Commodores (8-4 SEC/E, 18- 8 overall) moved into sole possession of second place in the SEC East by beating the number one ranked and SEC, East first-place Florida Gators (11- 1 SEC/E, 24- 3 overall). The 2006- 07 National Championship Gators were undefeated in the SEC until Vandy beat them easily 83- 70. The Commodores went into the locker room at halftime with a 35- 27 lead. Florida had been on a 17-game win streak until Vandy vanquished them.

For the Commodores, swingmen Derrick Byars and Shan Foster each pumped in 24 points, totally more than half of Vanderbilt’s 83 points. Although the Gators hit 82% from the foul line, they knocked down only 44% from the field, a significantly figure than their opponent’s 57%! Vanderbilt also hit almost 48% of its threes, while Florida knocked in only 38%. Vandy players totaled 21 assists, as the team managed to maintain sound ball movement. The Florida club had only 11 assists.

Some analysts surmised that the Gators might go undefeated in the SEC, but that changed as the Commodores managed to keep the Florida team out of contention throughout most of the game. With 4:28 left on the clock, Florida was eight points behind. They would never be ay closer.

Vanderbilt held the lead nd neer gave it up about halfway through the first-half. Vanderbilt is one game ahead of 18th ranked Kentucky (7- 5 SEC/E and 18- 8 overall) in the SEC- East. The Commodores have beaten 20th ranked Tennessee, 9th ranked Alabama, and 22nd ranked LSU, making them for real!
