Things That Make Me Go ‘Hmmm?!?!?’
The sports world is always good at producing news that makes you go ‘huh?!?’. There is lots to choose from that fits into that category today:
- Jay Cutler has spent a fairly long interview finding all sorts of ways to tell the world how much be respects Josh McDaniel. Among the head scratching quotes: “Just the brief amount of time I was able to spend with him, he’s impressive. He knows a lot about offenses, he knows a lot about getting guys open and scoring points, as everyone’s seen when he was in New England”. Remind me again why Cutler fought so hard and like such a baby to get away from the team? By the sounds of that quote t sounds like the right thing to do would have been to suck it up and be a part of things there. It’s not like he landed in a significantly better place offensively in Chicago. Bizarre.
- Rick Pitino says that this whole affair debacle has been ‘total hell’ for his family. Well, no kidding. What else would you expect when the dirty laundry of your pervert dad and husband gets aired in public ceaselessly? Why is this news?
- Milton Bradley wants sympathy from all of us because he gets booed in Wrigley Field and feels hatred. Oh, boo hoo. What else do you expect – you get paid a fortune, and have been a total waste of oxygen. We should love him just because he’s named after a board game maker? The guy makes $10 million a year and only has 10 home runs and 32 RBIs – with numbers like that I would hope that his own mother would boo him.
- What the heck is going on in Oakland? The police are about to interview coach Tom Cable over claims that he punched assistant Randy Hanson. He says that nothing happened, but the police are involved at the invitation of the NFL, and Hanson has a lawyer and is apparently looking at suing the team for what happened. Last year the team was disrupted because their coach was fired. This year they could be disrupted because their coach was arrested. This franchise is such a joke that it is far beyond words.
- The NHL is making a total and utter mockery of the Phoenix Coyotes situation. If you’ve missed it, the team is in bankruptcy and an auction looms early next month for the team. The leading bid comes from JimBalsillie, the CEO of RIM, the makers of the Blackberry – the fastest growing company in the world according to a recent survey. Balsillie has previously tried to buy two other teams and has been foiled by the league despite having more money than God. The issue is that he wants to move the team to Canada, and the league doesn’t want him to. He doesn’t have any interest in playing theNHL’s game, and as a result he is a total pariah in the league. The league was backing a bid by Jerry Reinsdorf, the owner of the Bulls and the White Sox , but they scared him off with all of the drama and bickering and the uncertainty that has caused. There is one other group that is bidding, but they don’t seem entirely stable. The latest wrinkle s that the league has decided to be a bidder in the auction. Their is to buy the team and then sell it to someone who will keep it in Phoenix. In the end that will probably end up beingReinsdorf because who else is there. The NHL offer is likely to be much, much less than the Balsillie offer. That’s what is so bizarre about this one – Balsillie has more money than any other NHL owner, he is totally and utterly obsessed with hockey, he owns a major tech company with access to millions of wealthy and educated users, and he wants to move the team out of a total loser of a market and into one that is home to millions of hockey mad people and companies likeBalsillie’s and other tech powers. There is no real downside, but the NHL is insistent on shutting him out, and costing themselves millions in the process. So strange.
