The Red Sox are hoping to earn a split in this four-game series and see their talented left-hander bounce back from a bad stretch.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Boston will try to salvage a split in this four-game series after dropping the last two contests, including a 7-2 defeat last night on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.  “This was a huge opportunity for us, trying to gain ground on these guys and Tampa Bay,” said third baseman Adrian Beltre.  “But unfortunately it didn’t work out the way we wanted.”  The Red Sox are now seven games back of the Yankees and 4.5 away in the Wild Card race.  The club is now an even 4-4 this month (-340) and 38-25 in August the last three years (+780).  Boston has also slipped up against divisional foes in 2010, posting a 21-22 record (-530), with the total being 24-17 O/U in those games.  The banged up ball  club did receive some encouraging news over the weekend, as second baseman Dustin Pedroia (left foot) has plans of returning to the lineup on August 17

The Bronx Bombers have been known to dominate opponents on Sundays at Yankee Stadium.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto suffered one of its worst defeats of the year on Saturday afternoon, giving up an 11-run third inning to ultimately fall 11-3 at Yankee Stadium.  The 11 runs for the Yankees equaled a franchise-record for the most runs the Blue Jays have surrendered in a single inning.  “Everything happened in that inning that you could imagine,” manager Cito Gaston said.  Overall, the Jays have won six of their last 10 contests against the Yankees.  Toronto is now 8-12 at Yankee Stadium dating back to the 2008 season, with an even 4-4 mark the last eight meetings.  The team’s current road trip has been a forgettable one, being outscored 49-23 in nine games.  Toronto has lost both games as a road underdog of +175 to +200 in 2010, while posting a 3-11 record in this spot the past three years (-530).

Stephen Strasburg has captured all of the headlines and imagination recently, and he should – his first outing was special in an incomprehensible way. He’s the poster child for the youth movement on the mound these days, but he’s far from the only young  guy who is doing some damage against opposing teams. Young pitchers are really paying off at the betting window as well – eight of the 25 most profitable starters who have had at least seven starts this season are under the age of 25, and two more are 25. It seems like it used to take a few years for pitchers to find their stride and settle into the role of strong starter, but guys these days are just jumping out of the gates. Beyond the profitable pitchers there are young guys tearing it up – Tim Lincecum had two Cy Youngs by 25, and David Price is leading the AL in wins at 25.

The Mets look to breakthrough with their first Subway Series victory at Citi Field against the Bronx Bombers

New York Yankees at New York Mets

The New York Yankees picked up a 2-1 road victory over their Subway Series rivals on Friday night.  In winning five straight over the Mets (+500), the Yankees have outscored them by a 35-4 margin.  The starting rotation has led the charge during the current streak, posting a 5-0 record and 0.84 ERA.  One key trend that ended with the opening series victory was the Yankees’ streak of winning games by more than a single run.  They won each of their first 25 games by two runs or more.  New York has compiled a 7-3 record in its last 10 road games in interleague play (+240).
