Two teams that are in the thick of the NL playoff race face off in a quick one-game series due to a rainout in May at Coors Field.

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies

Philadelphia heads to Colorado to play a single game series due to a May rainout on Thursday night at Coors Field.  The Phillies followed a three-game sweep of the Padres in San Diego by picking up two of three versus the Dodgers in Los Angeles.  The team is 5-1 on its seven-game road trip and leads tonight’s opponent by 5 1/2 games in the NL Wild Card race.  Overall, the club has posted a fantastic 11-2 record away from Philadelphia since the start of August.  Their upcoming schedule of opponents has a combined .498 winning percentage over the final 29 games of the season and the Phillies will play 16 of those games at Citizens Bank Park.  Philadelphia started the month off with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday and the team has compiled a fantastic 35-21 record in September over the last three years (+190).

The Rockies are a difficult team to deal with at home especially during the month of July.

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies

San Francisco earned an 11-8 come-from-behind victory last night over Colorado ace Ubaldo Jimenez at Coors Field.  The club has still lost nine of their last 11 games, but finally broke over the three-run barrier.  During the team’s seven-game losing streak, the offense failed to score more than three runs over that span.  “After losing so many in a row, we weren’t going to roll over and die,” said outfielder Nate Schierholtz.  Closer Brian Wilson continues to shut the door when given the opportunity, picking up his 22nd save of the season last night.  The Giants stand at an even 15-15 during the day this season (-260), with the total going 11-16-3 (O/U) in those contests.  The offense is batting .251 in the afternoon in 2010, while combining to hit just .225 over the past seven games.

The Giants are hoping starting pitcher Barry Zito’s success against tonight’s opponent will ultimately snap their losing streak.

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies

San Francisco lost its seventh straight game in dropping a 6-3 contest to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.  The offense is much to blame during the streak, failing to score more than three runs in any contest over that span.  The Giants have now lost nine of their last 10 games and 11 of their previous 14.  Facing division foes will not make turning things around any easier, with the team going 8-19 against the NL West division this season (-1,500).  That mark gets even worse with the team being 2-10 on the road against divisional opponents.  The team has produced a dismal 3-7 record in games after three or more consecutive losses (-460).
