Seven Not-So-Bold Statements

1. The Toronto Maple Leafs are a truly awful team right now. Incomprehensibly bad. Like Oakland Raiders bad. They are theoretically rebuilding, but the signs of progress are slim right now. Their top two goalies are hurt, most of their offense is either hurt or benched, and coach Ron Wilson seems to have a tenuous grasp on the team. Incredibly ugly.

2. The rumors are fling that Terrell Owens could end up in Chicago. I am getting tired of giving this guy the benefit of the doubt, but what’s going on in Buffalo isn’t his fault. If I was the Bears I would make that move if I could get him at a good price. It would certainly make them better.

3. There is no frontrunner in the Heisman race right now. It’s as if we are starting from scratch right now – the best player from the group of contenders from this point forward wins. Tim Tebow might have a small edge because of is name, but his play has limited that positivity on his front.

4. I expect Junior Seau to make only slightly more of an impact for the Patriots in his return to action than Michael Vick has made in his.

5. This Tom Cable police investigation won’t go away. The fact that it has this much leverage and life makes me think that there must be something to it. Him winding up in jail would be the best thing that could happen to Oakland – at least it would get him out of the job and give them a chance to hire someone better. They don’t have much of a track record for success on the coach-hiring front, but they are in a fortunate position here – pretty much anyone could be an improvement.

6. The Yankees are reportedly going with a three man rotation in the playoffs for one good reason – they only have three starters who are playoff quality. Is there anyone who really believes that Joba Chamberlain and Chad Gaudin are legitimately playoff-ready?

7. The Warriors are going to be a mess this year. Every time they are in the news it gets worse and worse. Their players don’t want to be there and don’t want to play together. The latest news is that Stephen Jackson has requested to have the captaincy taken away from him. I don’t know what it is about teams in the bay area right now – two thirds of them are lousy.
