Saturday Night Quick Notes

This US Open may never end. It’s reasonably entertaining, but it is so inconsistent and the weather is such a factor that there will be an asterisk the size of my head beside the name of whoever wins this one. At this rate Monday golf seems like a lock, and Tuesday could even be a possibility if things don’t change. I golfed on Friday with a woman whose boss paid a ridiculous amount of money to golf with Tiger Woods at a charity event. On Tuesday. It would be crushing to miss out of something like that. Of course, Tiger might not be in much of a mood to golf on Tuesday given how he has played so far, so maybe missing out would be a lucky thing.

I like Kevin O’Neill, and I don’t think he got a fair chance in Arizona. that being said, the guy must be an idiot. He came from out of nowhere to get the USC job today. This seems like a job that no one should want to take. They are almost certainly going to get nailed with sanctions, and their current recruiting class has been decimated. In short, there is almost no chance of success in the short and mid term. It might have been tough for O’Neill to get another prominent job given the issues in Arizona, but surely he would have been better off taking an assistant gig somewhere and working his way backup the ladder instead of taking this dud. He’ll look like a genius if he pulls it off, but there’s just one problem – he won’t.

I’m surprised that Roger Federer is at just 5/7 to win Wimbledon. I don’t necessarily think that he should be lower, but given the loss of Nadal I really expected that he would be. I’m a bit worried about Andy Murray, but Federer will win this one if he is healthy and focused. I won’t bet on him at this price, but I sure wouldn’t bet against him, either.

It looks like the Cubs may have remembered how to play again. And the Phillies have forgotten how to.
