Saturday Night Notes
Jason Schmidt hasn’t pitched in the majors for two years, but Dodgers’ manager Joe Torre announced before his game tonight that Schmidt is off the 60 day DL and will rejoin the team on Monday. Given what he has gone through, and because he is 36, I don’t hold out high hopes for him. Still, if he were able to come back and be even moderately useful then it’s a good boost to a rotation that is good but certainly could use some depth going into the stretch charge.
One hell of a pitcher’s duel took place this afternoon at Yankee Stadium where CC Sabathia came out on top of Detroit’s Justin Verlander in a 2-1 classic. Sabathia threw seven shutout innings, and Verlander allowed two runs in the same stretch, both coming in the seventh. Verlander was very frustrated to throw so well and have nothing to show for it, and he really should have been. The most interesting stat to come out of this – Sabathia won an afternoon start for the first time all year.
Scary, scary moment in the Colorado-San Diego game today. Padre Edgar Gonzalez took a 93 mph fastball off the side of the head. He hit the ground hard and stayed there before eventually being helped off the field on a cart. The long term prognosis is good, but he’ll be in for some rough days ahead, I’m sure.
Dan Haren was incredible against the Cardinals today. He dropped his ERA down to a microscopic 1.96 – best in the majors. Given how well Haren is pitching, and the opportunities in the NL West, it is frustrating to think of what Arizona could be doing this year if Brandon Webb had been at all healthy.
I continue to be amazed by what Tom Watson has done at the British Open. That being said, I just can’t believe he is going to hold on. He’s putted the lights out so far, and it’s been a long, long time since he has putted this well, so I don’t see it lasting. I will be hoping for him, but looking at the leaderboard would force me to bet on two players at ths point – Lee Westwood gets the bulk of my bankroll, and Retief Goosen gets a bit as well.
