Pitching In? MLB National League Starters Injured

With the start of the first week of the season, we find that there are 10 starters on a total of five teams that are injured in the NL. The teams with the biggest worries include the Diamondbacks (due to the importance and age of Randy Johnson and the nature of his problem—the back); the Cubbies (because so much of the rotation is in jeopardy); and the cards (two main guys are having problems and they lost some important starters to free agency).

Here’s the current list of guys who are out for as little as a few days to, perhaps, the rest of the season.

Randy Johnson (March 31) Arizona Diamondbacks—15-day DL He has had back problems again. He’s due to be pitching in the minors for a few starts. However, at his age and with his delivery I would expect his back problem to either continue to sideline him

or affect his delivery and velocity or both.

Lance Cormier (April 3) Atlanta Braves– Out He had a setback regarding his strained right shoulder during a side session on Tuesday. He won’t start on Sunday. An MRI is in the offing.

Ted Lilly (April 3) Chicago Cubs—Day to Day Lilly is like Ol’ Man River but will probably miss Wednesday’s start due to the flu. He should be back soon.

Juan Mateo (April 2) Chicago Cubs—15-day DL He’s having shoulder problems and the 1-year guy was put on the DL.

Kerry Wood (March 29) Chicago Cubs—15-day DL Wood played catch the other day but there’s no schedule regarding his return from shoulder problems.

Mark Prior (March 28) Chicago Cubs—Day-to-Day He’s got another Cactus League start but is not designated to start or be on the 25-man roster.

Eric Milton (March 31) Cincinnati Reds—Day-to- Day Due to start on Saturday, he won’t because of lower back spasms.

Elizardo Ramirez (March 30) Cincinnati Reds—15-day DL He’s suffering from shoulder problems and starts the season on the DL.

Chris Carpenter (April 3) St. Louis Cardinals—Day-to-Day Right elbow inflammation will have the ace missing at least his next start.

ark Mulder (March 31) St. Louis Cardinals– 15-day DL He’s had rotator cuff surgery.
