Pitching-in the AL Version

Okay, it’s really pitchers out. Starting pitchers out, that is. The Kenny Rogers deal is big, although the Tigers have depth in their staff. The Angels need to get both of their guns on track, although in such a weak division they can bide some time. Pettitte, like Johnson in the NL, should be a big concern due to his continued problems with back spasms and his age.

Here is a look at what’s going on with AL starters this first week.

Cliff Leer (April 1) Cleveland Indians—15-day DL He’s on the 15-day DL retroactive to March 22 due to an abdominal strain.

Kenny Rogers (March 30) Detroit Tigers– Out After having surgery to remove a blood clot from his left shoulder, Rogers is out at least until the All-Star break.

Scott Elarton (March 30) Kansas City Royals– Out He pitched a minor league game last Wednesday and felt good. He could possibly be back by mid-May.

Odalis Perez (March 30) Kansas City Royals—Day-to-Day He’s got some blisters, which will probably not keep him out.

Bartolo Colon (April 3) Los Angeles Angels—15-day DL He’s got a rehab start on Thursday where he scheduled to toss 60 pitches to test his rotator cuff.

Jered Weaver (March 28) Los Angeles Angels—15-day DL He has tendinitis in his biceps. He tossed 47 pitches in three innings a minor league rehad start the other day.

Chien-Ming Wang (March 30) New York Yankees—15-day DL With a hamstring problem, Wang is due to throw in the pen on Friday.

Andy Pettitte (March 29) New York Yankees—Day-to-Day Pettitte is still scheduled to start the Yanks’ second game of the season but could be scratched due to back spasms.

Dan Haren (April 3) Oakland A’s—Day-to-Day Messed up his flexor when he stumbled pitching on Monday. It’s doubtful that he will miss any time.

Esteban Loaiza (Apr 3) Oakland A’s—15-day DL An MRI revealed more damage than original estimates had noted. He will moss more than the one that was predicted earlier.

John Rheinecker (March 29) Texas Rangers—15-day DL The pitcher is having back problems.

John Thomson (March 30) Toronto Blue Jays—15-day DL After pitching a scoreless inning in the minors the other day, Thomson still start the season on the DL.
