NL- Does Any One in the East Want to be in First

That’s what I’m wondering? The longest winning streak presently is Florida, which won one game. Everyone one else is on a backwards tear with the first-place Mets and second-place Atlanta battling to give it all up as both stand with three game losing streaks. Over the past ten, NY is 6- 4 (the best in the East) and the Braves are 5-5 and 4 games back.

The Phills have tried to come alive (at least their hitting has) but they have lost 2 straight and are 4- 6 and 5 back. Washington is at the bottom at 13.5 back and having lost 2 in a row. They are 2- 8 over the past 10. They have scored the least number of runs of any team in the majors—304 over 83 games.

And Florida may have 1 victory but they are 3- 7 over the past 10 and 8 games out.

The Phillies got some bad news. Veteran starter Jon Lieber, who has a ruptured tendon in his left foot, has to have season-ending surgery. Lieber was injured on June 20 while backing up a play a home in Cleveland. He was put on the DL three days after that.

This season over 12 starts, Lieber was 3- 6 with a 4.73 ERA. Over that span, he’s walked 22 and K’d 54. In 2001, he was 20- 6 for the Cubs. Since that time, he’s posted only two winning seasons. In 2004, he went 14- 8 for the Yanks and in 2005, he was 17- 13 with the Phillies.
