The Lions and 49ers look to bounce back from poor Week One performances as they meet on the West Coast.

Both the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions lost their opening game last week. The 49ers host the Lions Sunday in Santa Clara. The 49ers lead the series 37-28-1 and the series dates back to 1950. The Lions won the last meeting 32-17 in Detroit to snap a nine game losing streak to the 49ers.

Detroit is coached by Matt Patricia in his first season. The Lions were destroyed at home 48-17 by the New York Jets Monday night. Detroit was a seven point favorite and the total was 44.

It started off really well for Detroit as Jets’ rookie quarterback Sam Darnold threw a pick six on his first play from scrimmage to give the Lions a 7-0 lead. The wheels would fall off though for Detroit. The Jets scored 17 straight points to take a 17-7 lead with less than two minutes to go in the first half. The Lions kicked a  field goal with 11 seconds left to trail 17-10 going into the locker room.

The Lions scored a touchdown on their opening possession of the second half. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a 24 yard touchdown pass to receiver Golden Tate to tie it up. However, Detroit would never score again. The Jets ended the third quarter by scoring 31 straight points. They scored five different ways too. New York scored on a touchdown pass, a pick six, a punt return, a field goal and a touchdown run. Neither team scored in the fourth as the Jets completed the rout 48-17.

New York had 349 total yards including 180 passing and 169 rushing yards. Detroit had 339 passing yards including 300 passing yards and 39 rushing yards. The Lions had 20 first downs and the Jets had 18. New York had 7 penalties for 49 yards and Detroit had 3 penalties for 15 yards. The Jets were 1/4 in the red zone and the Lions were 0/2. The difference in the game was Detroit had five turnovers to two for New York. The Jets held possession for 33:07.

Stafford had one of the worst games of his 10 year career. He looked like the rookie instead of Darnold. He completed 27/46 passes for 286 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions, and rushed for six yards on a carry. He briefly left the game in the third quarter after being sandwiched by two Jets players. He is probable with a chest injury against the 49ers. Matt Cassel threw for 14 yards and and interception in relief of Stafford.

Running back Theo Riddick had 4 carries for 20 yards and 5 catches for 15 yards. Kerryon Johnson had 5 carries for 17 yards and 3 catches for 20 yards. LaGarrette Blount left the game with a shoulder injury and is questionable this week. Remarkably, Detroit has not had a 100 yard rusher in any game since Thanksgiving in 2013.

Receiver Kenny Golladay had 7 catches for 114 yards. Tate had 7 catches for 79 yards with a touchdown. Marvin Jones, Jr. had 4 catches for 54 yards.

San Francisco is coached by Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers lost last Sunday at the Minnesota Vikings 24-16. Minnesota was a six point favorite and the total was 46.5.

The Vikings jumped out to a 10-0 lead early in the second and would never really be threatened. San Francisco kicked a 42 yard field goal early in the second to pull within a touchdown. The Vikings took a 10-3 lead into halftime. The Vikings scored on a 28 yard pick six in the third to take a 17-3 lead. The 49ers kicked a field goal to pull within 17-6. However, the Vikings scored again to lead 24-6. San Francisco pulled to within 24-13 late in the third and added a field goal with less than five minutes left in the fourth to make it 24-16. The 49ers had two more drives to try and tie it but the last ended on an interception with 11 seconds left.

The Vikings had 343 total yards including 227 passing yards and 116 rushing yards. The 49ers had 327 total yards including 237 passing and 90 rushing yards. San Francisco had 20 first downs and Minnesota had 19. The 49ers were 1/4 scoring in the red zone and the Vikings were 1/2. San Francisco had three penalties for 21 yards and Minnesota had seven for 52 yards. The 49ers had four turnovers and the Vikings had one. Minnesota held possession for 31:09.

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed 15/33 passes for 261 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions, plus two carries for 6 yards. He was sacked three times.

Running back Matt Breida had 11 carries for 46 yards, and a catch for five yards. Alfred Morris had 12 carries for 38 yards.

Tight end George Kittle had 5 catches for 90 yards. Receiver Dante Pettis had 2 catches for 61 yards with a touchdown. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk had a catch for 56 yards. Ten defensive players and four offensive linemen are listed on the injury report.

The under is 8-1-1 in this series recently including 6-0-1 in San Francisco. The home team and favorite are both 3-1-1 ATS in this series recently. The 49ers are 4-1-1 ATS against the Lions recently and 4-1-2 ATS at home in the series.

Both teams turned the ball over way too much last week. The 49ers were playing on the road against one of the top teams and defenses in the league, so they have a little bit of an excuse. Even though the 49ers are banged up I like them to win a close low scoring game at home.
