NFL- Chicago Can’t Bear Grossman

The Chicago Bears are in trouble. At 1 -2, they are reeling, having lost to San Diego 14- 3 and the Cowboys 34- 10. In between those two games, Chicago beat the Chiefs by a score of 20- 10. It was in that game that Grossman threw his one TD pass of this young season. He also tossed two interceptions that day. He threw one giveaway in his first game versus the Chargers and three in his last against Dallas.

Here’s the skinny on Rex—1 TD, 6 INT, 52.8 CMP% and a 45.2 QB rating. Brian Griese, the 32-year old vet, will replace Grossman. There have been question all summer regarding Grossman’s ability to function as a starter. He was shaky last season but managed to lead the club to the Super Bowl where he threw 2 INT and 1 TD. The Bears lost to the Colts 17- 29. Grossman also fumbled twice in that game, losing one of them.

Griese, who has played for four teams in 10 years, started for the Broncos for four years and the Bucanners for one. He has a career QB rating of 84.5 and a career completion rate of 63.0%. Last season with the Bears, he saw very little action, throwing 32 passes and hitting 56.3% of them. He threw 1 TD, 2 INT and was sacked three times.

To make things worse for the Bears, their corners are hurt and may or may not play. Nathan Vasher and Charles Tillman, both starters, are dealing with injuries. Pro Bowlers Tommie Harris (defensive tackle) and Lance Briggs (linebacker) are suffering from a sprained knee and pulled hamstring respectively. Neither will play. Strong safety Adam Archuleta is also out with a broken hand.

Still, coach Lovie Smith said that he’s optimistic that he’ll have everyone. But, nothing is bringing back Bears’ standout Pro Bowl safety Mike Brown, who ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the opener. Other important defensive elements are also out for good. Brown, along with being a premiere player, is a solid, emotional team leader.

The Bears play the 2- 1 Detroit Lions. The Lions won their first two games, beating Oakland 36- 21 and Minnesota 20- 17 in OT. But then they lost their third game to Philadelphia 21- 56. In that game the Lion’s offense played well but the “D was abysmal.

This next game is a conference battle so it’s mighty important for both teams. The Bears play at Detroit on Sunday at 1:00 PM ET.
