Atlanta hosts Carolina Sunday in a do or die battle for the NFC South Championship.
Atlanta hosts Carolina Sunday in a do or die battle for the NFC South Championship.

Usually when six win NFL teams meet in late December very little is at stake besides perhaps jobs for next season. That is not the case as the 6-9 Atlanta Falcons host the 6-8-1 Carolina Panthers with the NFC South title and a playoff berth on the line Sunday. The winner will be the #4 seed in the NFC playoffs and host either  the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers or Detroit Lions in the wild card game next week. Those four teams plus the NFC East Champion Dallas Cowboys are all 11-4 and playing for seeding in week #17.

Since 2001, Atlanta leads the series 17-10 against Carolina. The Falcons won earlier in the season in Charlotte 19-17 to snap a 3 game losing streak to the Panthers.

Carolina is 5-2 ATS after gaining more than 350 total yards, and after allowing less than 250 total yards, 10-4 after allowing less than 150 passing yards, 16-7-1 against teams with losing records, 9-4 against NFC South teams, 24-11-1 in December, 3-7 in road games, 2-5 overall, 1-4 after rushing for more than 150 yards, and 1-5 after allowing less than 15 points. The Panthers are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 games in this series and were underdogs in each of those games.

Atlanta is 6-1 ATS against NFC South teams, 5-1 against NFC teams, 4-1 in week #17 and in December, 6-2 after rushing for less than 90 yards, 2-6 on fieldturf, 2-7 after a straight up win by 14 points or more, 1-4 after a straight up win and against teams with losing records, and 1-8 after allowing 15 points or less. The home team has covered the last 4 games in this series. The Falcons have covered 5 of the last 6 at home against the Panthers.

It is hard to believe that teams with losing streaks of six and five games are one win away from making the playoffs, but here we are. Nine teams that either have been eliminated from playoff contention or haven’t qualified yet would be in first place in the terrible NFC South. Atlanta is banged up at the skill positions but I think they still have enough to escape with a close win at home in a low scoring game.
