NCAA Basketball Maryland Surprises UNC

The Maryland Terrapins proved that the unrated can take down anyone, including the number one college basketball team in the country, the North Carolina Tar Heels. The first half ended with Maryland on top 41- 35. The visiting Terps scored another 41 in the second half, while UNC managed 45, falling two points short. The final score was 82- 80.

The Terrapins hit 47% of their shots from the floor, while the Tar Heels were good for only 38%. The Heels made up for some of their field goal misses by hitting 86.7% fromn the charity stripe to Maryland’s 80%. Although the Tar Heels out rebounded the Terrapins 46 to 32, Maryland was tough on “D,� blocking five UNC shots.

With 20 seconds left, Maryland went ahead 82- 80 on a two point jumper by Bambale Osby. In the last 15 seconds, the Tar Heels had three chances to either win or tie the game, but Wayne Ellington missed a three at 15 seconds and then a two at seven seconds. Tyler Hansbrough missed the final shot of the game, a three-point attempt, at the final second.

This week, the Tar Heels in the ACC will face #24 Miami, unranked Boston College and unranked Florida State. The first two games could be tough ones for UNC. This was the first conference loss for UNC (3-1). Only #5 Duke is perfect in the conference, going 3-0.
