The Dallas Mavericks have had some time off to prepare for the San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio has won six games in a row, including a 106-102 victory over the New Orleans Hornets as 8.5-point home favorites, while going OVER the total for the first time in six contests.  The Spurs will be playing this game without head coach Gregg Popovich on the sidelines due to an illness, while Tim Duncan also didn’t make the trip with a knee injury.  “Pop might be the only person who’s tougher than me,” commented Spurs forward Stephen Jackson.  The team is 15-9 overall away from home this season, but just 6-7 versus Western Conference foes.  San Antonio is 5-7 ATS in January, which is something to consider when making your NBA picks against the spread Friday night.

The Spurs have won their first two meetings against the Mavericks this year, as they’ve scored 240 combined points, which has moved their overall record to 39-38 when playing at Dallas.  San Antonio is third in the NBA in outscoring opponents by an average of 8.2 points per game, while also sitting in the same spot in averaging 104.1 points per game overall.

Dallas is certainly trying to turn around its season in winning five of its last six games, including a 111-105 victory over the Orlando Magic as 3.5-point road favorites five days ago, while going OVER the total in three of its last four contests.  “Four days off in the middle of the season usually doesn’t happen much, so you gotta make the best of it,” stated Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki.  He needs just 27 points to land in the 18th spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.  Dallas is 9-2 ATS this month, with the OVER going 7-3-1 in that span.

The Mavericks have won 11 of their 19 games at the American Airlines Center, but are just 5-7 against conference opponents in that situation.  Dallas has scored 100-plus points in each of its last six games, averaging 110.7 points per game in that span.  It’s important to note that the team has led in the fourth quarter in each of its last 11 games.

Sports bettors will likely play the total in this affair, as the OVER is 4-0 in the Mavericks last four games when playing on three or more days rest.
