Monday Notes
I can’t wait to see Tim Wakefield pitch in the all-star game. He’s a pleasure to watch, and he deserves to be there for the first time. There isn’t a high profile knuckleballer in the NL right now, so it could be fun to see some of these big guys facing a knuckleballer – perhaps for the first time ever. It’s the little stories like this that have to be relied upon to make the all-star game interesting, because as a whole it’s not a great event in my eyes.
Lance Armstrong has made a big jump from 10th all the way to third in the Tour de France after three stages. Don’t count the old guy out yet.
Bad luck sadly seems to travel in packs, doesn’t it? Weeks after Phil Mickelson’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer his mother has received the same diagnosis. Needless to say, hopes and prayers and all that.
What an impossibly bad outing for Johnny Cueto today. The Reds’ pitcher has had a pretty solid season – he was 8-4 coming into the game with an ERA of just 2.69. Today he managed to make it through just 11 batters. He got two out , and allowed the other nine to score. That makes his ERA on the game a truly ridiculous 121.5, and it bumps his season ERA up almost a full point to 3.45. The Reds never recovered from the very ugly start, and wound up losing 22-1. Cole Hamels has never had an easier win. He was pretty good, but he certainly didn’t need to be. You almost wonder why they bothered to leave him in once the game got out of hand.
An interesting situation is developing in Milwaukee. After another bad outing, Ryan Braun couldn’t take it anymore and told the media, in detail, how the starting pitching was letting the team down and making it hard for the team to reach its potential. Needless to say, GM Doug Melvin isn’t happy – he called the comments irresponsible. This is the kind of situation that can fester and grow into much more than it currently is, butMelvin can hardly afford that – Braun has led the NL outfielders in all-star votes two years in a row. Someone is going to have to be the bigger man here, and it pretty much has to be Melvin.
