MLB- Zambrano Does a Dozen

The Chicago Cubs’ Carlos Zambrano became the first NL pitcher to win 12 in 2007. Zambrano is 12- 7 over 21 starts with 117 SO and 59 BB. Hitters have a batting average of .277 when facing him and .136 over his past seven starts. His ERA is presently 3.69.The starting pitcher hurled five innings of shutout ball as the Cubs, now 7- 3 over the past 10, find themselves just 3.5 games behind the Central Division leading Milwaukee Brewers.

Zambrano, who feels that he will resign from the Cubs after this season, noted that he wants to help his team get to the post-season. In six games since the All-Star, the Cubs are 5- 1. Zambrano gave up only two hits to the San Francisco Giants who were once again without Barry Bonds. Bonds sat out his third game straight wit sore legs but expects to be back in the lineup on Friday.

Since starting versus Pittsburgh on July 8th, the Cubs’ starter has 15 2-3 scoreless innings. Milwaukee, which has gone 5- 5 over the past 10, lost 2- 5 to Arizona tonight. The third-place St. Louis Cardinals beat Florida tonight putting them 8.5 game in back of the leaders.

St. Louis goes to Atlanta for the weekend and then plays three at home versus the Cubs and four at home versus the Brewers.

The next week could reveal a new leader.
