MLB Trade Deadline Passes

There was a lot of action today but maybe the biggest deal that didn’t happen was Alfonso Soriano staying put in Washington.  Soriano will remain a Washington National and try to work out a long term contract agreement.  Some teams that expressed serious interest in the Washington outfielder were the Angels, Mariners, and Twins but nothing was able to get done.

Here are some other deals that did happen.

The LA Dodgers acquired Cubs starting pitcher Greg Maddux for SS/3B Cesar Izturis.  Chicago will also contribute 2 Million dollars of Maddux’s salary.  Maddux is just 9-11 with a 4.69 ERA after starting out 5-0 this year.

In another move by LA, the Dodgers pick up Julio Lugo from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.  Lugo’s stock had dropped over the past 48 hours, but is a quality fielder that should help sure up the Dodgers infield and as an insurance policy in case Jeff Kent or Nomar Garciapara cannot stay healthy.

The Pirates were a very busy ballclub today first with the trade of Sean Casey to the Detroit Tigers.  In return for Casey the Pirates recieved minor league pitcher Brian Rodgers. Casey gives Detroit the left handed bat they were looking for and a great veteran guy for the clubhouse.  Casey is a career .304 hitter and a 3 time National League All Star.

Pittsburgh also dealt 1B/OF Craig Wilson to the Yankees for starting pitcher Shawn Chacon.  With the addition of Lidle yesterday there was no need for Chacon and his 7.00 ERA to start for the Yanks the rest of the season.

The Pirates also made a move and dealt some pitching to the Mets.  Young dissapointing stud Oliver Perez and right hand reliever Roberto Hernandez with move to NY in exchange for OF Xavier Nady.

Finally starting pitcher Kip Wells was traded to the Texas Rangers for minor league pitcher Jesse Chavez.  This was the final move made by the Pirates on this exciting day.  The Rangers also picked up Matt Stairs from KC for a minor leaguer.

Some quick notes on some of the other deals.

Jeremy Affeldt was traded to Colorado, Cubs 2B Todd Walker was dealt to the San Diego Padres, the Reds get Rheal Cormier from the Philadelphia Phillies and also Kyle Loshe from the Twins.

Feel free to comment on the trade deadline winners and losers!
