MLB–Clot Caught Rogers by Surprise
The Detroit Tigers got a big blow to their starting rotation as star pitcher Kenny Rogers had surgery to remove a blood clot from his left shoulder and to repair arteries today. Rogers had been complaining about having a tired arm about two days ago.Last season, the pitcher was stellar starting 34 games and posting a 17- 8 record with a 3.84 ERA. He notched 99 strikeouts and gave up 62 walks. Rogers, who has not been on the DL since 2001, will most likely be out until the All Star break.
That means that Chad Durbin will join the rotation. Last season Durbin, who is a veteran with 337 MLB innings and a 6.14 ERA and has been a DL candidate before, went 11- 8 in 28 games with Triple-A Toldeo. He posted a 3.11 ERA and in 185 innings had an impressive strike to walk ration of 149- 46.
In the post-season last year, Rogers was a rock winning all three of his starts and posting a 0.00 ERA in 23 innings. During spring training, Rogers started 5 games, going 2- 0 with a 2.05 ERA.
The Tigers are deep with starting pitchers. Their rotation includes Nate Robertson (13- 13, 3.84 ERA), who will now start opening day. Jeremy Bonderman (14- 8, 4.08 ERA) becomes the second starter and Justin Verlander (17- 9, 3.63 ERA) goes third, while Mike Maroth (5- 2, 4.19 ERA) will be the fourth man on the mound. Durbin is the fifth man in the rotation.
The Tigers are scheduled to start against the Toronto Blue Jays in Monday, April2 at 1:05 pm in Comerica Park. Halladay (16- 5, 3.19 ERA) will start for Toronto.
Many have picked the Tigers to win their division or to take the Wild Card once again in 2007.
