MLB- Bad News for Tigers and Kenny Rogers

The Detroit Tigers are making it much easier for the Cleveland Indians as they have lost five straight and nine of their last ten. The Indians, who are only 3- 7 over their last ten, have managed to take over first-place in the AL Central by ½ game. The Minnesota Twins have gained ground, going 6- 4 during the last 10. They are 4.5 games out of first.

Detroit, which has lost three straight to the Angels and two of three to the A’s and three in a row to the White Sox, are at home this week with four against Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay has been struggling all season and the visit by the Devil Ray may be just what the Tigers need.

But there was bad news today as it was announced that starting pitcher Kenny Rogers, who had been so important to the Tigers getting to the World Series last season, was out. Rogers came back at the start of the second-half of the season from an operation in the spring to remove a blood clot in his arm. Over six games he was 3-2 with a 5.23 ERA.

Rogers, who had been on the 15-DL since suffering elbow inflammation on July 30, was throwing in a practice session on Sunday when he felt pain in his left elbow and had to stop. When asked by the Detroit Free Press how many throws he’d taken before stopping, the lefty said, “Not many.

ESPN reported that Rogers said to the Free Press, “I’m frustrated, without a doubt. I’m not happy being out, much less not being ready as fast as we need.”

This week, Tiger rookie lefty Andrew Miller (5- 4, 4.42 ERA, .261 BAA), also a starter, found himself on the DL with a strained left hamstring. Recently, starter Jeremy Bonderman (10- 4, 4.50 ERA) has lost three straight starts while giving up 21 runs.

Just two weeks ago, Detroit had the best record in baseball and now they find themselves leading the Yankees and Mariners for the Wild Card by ½ game.

Can Jim Leyland work some magic? The trade deadline has past and the Tigers look like they may simply fade away. The Tigers need Rogers badly.
