MLB- Torre says Steinbrenner Supports Him
Joe Torre may be headed into the series of his career and it isn’t even the All-Star break yet. The Boston Red Sox will be in the Bronx for a three game series starting tonight and with the Yankees unable to “buy a win (literally and figuratively), you’ve got to figure that the axe may fall anytime on the renowned New York skipper.
The Yankees are in third-place in the AL East—a whole 10.5 games out of first place. In six contests this season the Yanks have beaten the Beantown Bombers only once. If Torre’s club can win at least two of three the next few days, then certainly he’ll be seen in a more positive light.
Of course, it’s tough to blame Torre for an aging and injured pitching staff and a club that has no timing for timely hitting. Still, the buzz is that his job is in jeopardy.
Roger Clemens should help the pitching staff. But he can’t improve the bullpen, which has certainly struggled this season.
Let’s say the Yanks take two of three from the Sox or even sweep them does that mean that Joe Torre’s job is safe? Not at all.
As long as there is the perception that things have to change in order to get better, then the manager’s future will be in doubt. That’s just the way that it is. In baseball especially, it is usually the manager who gets cut when things are going poorly. There’s very little you can do to a team of vets in MLB.
Football, you can make massive changes compared to baseball. Even in hockey, changes on the club are easier to make. But baseball and basketball, what you see is what you’re going to get for that season as far as players are concerned.
The manager watch is on in NYC.
