Lots To Watch On Saturday
This weekend doesn’t feature as many high profiles events as some have recently, but there is still more than enough to keep us entertained. Here are eight things that will keep my remote control busy today:
Mets at Red Sox – I am not generally a fan of interleague play, but I do enjoy some of the matchups it creates on the mound. This one is among the more interesting. Josh Beckett and Mike Pelfrey have both put up decent records despite not really living up to expectations so far. Both are capable of a big game, though, and that makes this one fun to watch.
Blue Jays at Braves – This one features two pitchers – Scott Richmond and Derek Lowe – who are both giving their teams more than you could probably have reasonably expected them to. Both teams are more fun to watch than the average squad, too. It’s also a rare contest between Bobby Cox and his former team. This is the best of the non-marquee series, I think.
Angels at Dodgers – The battle for L.A. has been pretty good the last few years. This game features the third start (second really – his first only lasted two pitches) for John Lackey. He hasn’t looked great yet, but he’s a very good pitcher and it will be interesting to see how quickly he finds his form.
Penguins at Hurricanes - This series certainly doesn’t lack fireworks. It has been great so far, and there is no reason it won’t continue. Any chance to watch Sidney Crosby is a chance worth taking.
Lakers at Nuggets – One word – Kobe. Another word if you need one – Melo. This series is definitely ready for prime time.
Milady Handicap - Zenyatta makes her season debut in this race at Hollywood Park on Saturday afternoon. Rachel Alexandra is the filly getting all the attention right now, but this undefeated wonder horse is the undisputed queen of the racing women and, for now, it’s not even close. The two fillies will meet at some point and itwill be spectacular.
French Open - The inevitable march to yet another Federer-Nadal final gets underway in Paris on Saturday night our time. The setting is beautiful, the drama is often great, and the prospect of seeing Nadal beat up on everyone in his path is always interesting. Even if you don’t like tennis, Ana Ivanovic is enough to make this tournament a very good thing.
UFC 98 – It’s not a particularly thrilling card, but seeing Mat Hughes and Matt Serra – two guys who really hate each other – work out there frustrations should be good for some fun.
