The Preakness entries have been received, and the odds and post positions will be set later on this afternoon. There are 13 entries, including headliners Mine That Bird, Pioneerof The Nile, Friesan Fire, and of course the filly Rachel Alexandra. It’s all but certain that Rachel Alexandra will be made the favorite. Now it just remains to be seen how much of a favorite she is. There’s a chance that she will go off at even money or better by post time. I think shes a special horse, but that would be ridiculous. We’ll look at the race more closely tomorrow and Friday.
This Robert Marve soap opera is getting ridiculous. Marve is the former Miami quarterback who is looking to transfer away from the Hurricanes. He’s flirted with pretty much every school in the country, and it is taking him forever to make a decision – far too long for a guy like him. It looked like he had finally settled on Purdue, but now there is a new twist to the story. Miami won’t release his scholarship if he decides to go to Tennessee, Florida, or LSU because the Canes think that those schools tampered with Marve while he was still with Miami. Undeterred, Marve is apparently considering walking on at Tennessee. It makes sense in one way – Jonathan Crompton is a senior and only junior Nick Stephens is on the roster as a viable replacement. If Marve walks on he’d have to pay for school next year, but he could practice with the team, and he could be ready to step in in 2010. On the other hand, Tennessee is likely to land a blue chip QB or two next year, so Marve could have competition. He’d be more secure at Purdue, but less likely to win anything. Either way, I just hope he makes a choice soon. We’ve heard far too much about a guy who has yet to prove that he is any good.
Jason Taylor makes no sense. He walked away from an $8.5 million deal with the Redskins because he didn’t want to practice with the team. Now he has a new deal with the Dolphins for a maximum of $1.5 million. I understand how nice it is to spend time at home and with family and all, but you can buy a lot of first class flights between home and Washington for $7 million.
Remember NBA player Corie Blount? If you want to see the former Bull, Cav, Laker, Sun, Sixer, or Raptor in the next year the you are going to have to go visit him in prison. It turns out he got busted for marijuana possession and intent to traffic. This was no amateur effort, either – he got busted with 29 pounds of the stuff. The best part – he claimed that it was all for personal use. Points for effort, I guess.
