Five Breakout Players

Every year there are guys who have been around for a while who seem to suddenly figure out how to play. Whether it’s a change in their approach to the game or training, a a new system or teammate that makes them more valuable, something changes and their stats show it – often in a big way. Here’s five guys who could see a big boost in their production and value this year:

1. Greg Olsen – Jay Cutler is going to be looking for someone to throw the ball to, and my bet is that Olsen is going to be near the top of the list of targets. He’s a big, strong tight end who was drafted to shine as a receiver. He should be the uncontested starter this year, and early indications are that he is already building good chemistry with his new pivot. It’s time for a new tight end star in the league, and Olsen could be it.

2. Ray Rice – Rice committed to fitness in a serious way in the offseason, and the results are apparently clear. The Ravens have been favoring a running-back-by-committee approach this year, but that always leaves room for a back to emerge as the star. Rice’s biggest asset is his versatility – he’s a great runner who also catches well out of the backfield. Rice has the right attitude to shine, and he could mesh well with Joe Flacco and the young offensive core.

3. Darren McFadden – McFadden was drafted to be a stud but he certainly wasn’t last year. It doesn’t seem like a terrible bet, though, that he’ll shine this year. It’s not like he has a stellar QB in front of him who will be hogging the action to pass the ball. He’ll have a consistent coaching staff this year, and it seems like that offense is more inclined to use him properly this year. If McFadden can get healthy and stay that way then he could finally live up to his potential.

4. Vernon Davis – Davis has not been good after being drafted with such high hopes. A big part of the reason for that, though, has been that he is misused. He’s not a bashing, crashing type of physical guy, yet the Niners have insisted on using him significantly in a blocking role. In general I know that a tight end is supposed to block, but I also think that a smart coaching staff uses a player to do what he does best. In Davis’ case that’s catching passes. A new offensive coordinator seems to finally recognize that, and it could make a huge difference for Davis.

5. DeSean Jackson – I hesitate to put Jackson on this list because I am generally not a big fan of the undersized speedsters – I don’t trust their durability. All reports, though, are that Jackson is looking very good. He’s fitter, stronger and faster than last year. That could contribute to improvements both in his return game and his receiving. The receiving impact could be particularly profound – the Eagles could use a deep threat, and Jackson could really bloom if he grows into that position.
