English Premier League Soccer Betting Preview
There’s a good array of matches Saturday, but the favorites look strong in each matchup and in games such as Aresenal’s, it’s difficult to imagine the underdog coming away with a victory. We’ll take a look here at the seven matches on Saturday morning (our time here in the States). Betting odds taken from Bodog.

There’s a good array of matches Saturday, but the favorites look strong in each matchup and in games such as Aresenal’s, it’s difficult to imagine the underdog coming away with a victory. We’ll take a look here at the seven matches on Saturday morning (our time here in the States).
Liverpool -185, Stoke City +145
Fernando Torres has been sold for $50m L to Chelsea and the team also takes Andy Carroll from Newcastle and Suarez from Ajax. Carroll is hurt but Suarez could possibly start, though he may not yet be fit for a match yet.
The teams met last season in Liverpool and Liverpool won 4-0, but the second game was a 0-0 tie. The odds for Stoke City to win again are very rewarding if you are feeling like making a risky value bet. They are 10th with 30 points in 23 games and boast a 3-1-7 record. Stoke got to the FA cup final last year and are still a legit team as a contender
Liverpool is a better team, but Liverpool isn’t pleased with themselves thus far and they will undoubtedly come out focused. While it’s tempting to go with Stoke City given the favorable odds, Liverpool should prevail in this game.
Arsenal -275, Swansea City +750
The Arsenal are 17th after 3 rounds and are still looking for their first win in the 2011-2012 Premier League Season. With an 0-1-2 record they have scored but 2 goals in the three matches. Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is injured and will miss at least one month. The newest transfers onto the squad are Yossi Benayoun, Peter Mertesacker, Joel Campbell and Mike Arteta.
Swansea is a newcomer to the premier league and they are the first Welsh team in the EPL. They are 0-2-1 through their first 3 games and have not yet scored a goal, while allowing only 4. They lost to Wigan and Sunderland at home and on August 23rd they played in the Carling Cup and lost to Shrewsbury. Their two notable transfers are Wayne Routledge and Danny Graham.
Bettors will favor Aresenal due to the fact that Swansea has yet to score and lost their only away game 0:4. Aresnal may not score a lot of goals, but Swansea City could possibly walk out for their fourth straight without a goal.
Everton -200, Aston Villa +155
Everton rose to 8th after beating Fulham at home and they are going to look to ride that momentum against the underdog Aston Villa.
Everton took almost all of last season before they finally put things together…they can’t afford to do that this year. The Toffees have struggled so far this year, but have always performed better against contending teams. The Toffees have also played better of late and picked up 10 pts in the last 4 games.
There are injury concerns for Everton, however. Louis Saha, and Marouane Fellaini are out and Tim Cahill, Seamus Coleman, Jack Rodwell, and Jose Baxter are all doubtful. If Cahill and Rodwell aren’t ready to go, Aston Villa could be a great value pick in this match.
That would be a bit presumptious, however, in light of the fact that Aston Villa has been even worse than Everton up to this point. They are also having off the field problems and have been clashing against the coaches.
For those reasons, even with Everton missing a slew of players, it seems wise for bettors to back favored Everton in this match.
Manchester City -550, Wigan Athletic +1400
Manchester City once again looks to be the real deal this sesaon, with a great combo of offense and defense, and a defense that certainly has looked cast iron strong, with few sieves at any point.
Nasri had an amazing debut and Dzeko, Aguero (perhaps most impressive of all, scoring 2 goals and another assisting Silva, who has been their best player thus far this season), and Silva have all looked solid as well. Manchester City knows that this could be their year in the Premier league but they have to dispose of bad and mediocre teams like Wigan, and they have struggled to do that in the past.
Wigan was fortunate to come out and play well against QPR and they snuck out with a 2-0 victory, but they suffered a draw against Swansea and Norwich, and have only scored more than one goal once. That lack of offense makes it difficult to back a horrific underdog like Wigan, especially given the fact that they haven’t really shown any signs of being more than a bad club.
Chelsea -160, Sunderland +450
Sunderland put together a decent effort against Tottenham and came away with a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night. Asamoah Gyan played well once again and was enough to deter Rafael van der Vaart’s attempt to score late in the game.
Sunderland just doesn’t have much of a chance in this one, even if things aren’t all rosy at Chelsea. Assistant coach Ray Wilkins was fired at halftime ten months ago, and no explanation was given. Even with this turmoil, Chelsea is a far superior team and should dispose of Sunderland easily in this one. Chelsea has a great crop of youngsters recruited by boss Andres Villas-Boas, of Portugal.
Tottenham Hotspur -140, Wolverhampton Wanderers +110
The Wolves are attempting to get out of the bottom three of the Premier league and the Tottenham Hotspur are trying their best to get back into the Champions’ League.
At this point it isn’t definite which strikers will start for the Spurs, as Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, and Roman Pavlyuchenko have all played horridly. New striker Emmanuel Adebayer signed on loan from Manchester City.
Wolverhampton beat Blackpool last year 4-0, and are going to try to use that game as motivation to prove they are back in contention. Though European Soccer oddsmakers have set the line in Tottenham’s favor, it’s hard not to think of them as an underdog in some senses. Still, they are favored by oddsmakers and should be able to dispose of Wolverhampton, though a draw is a strong possibility.
Manchester United -155, Bolton Wanderers +120
No team has taken more than 9 shots on target against Manchester United at Old Trafford since 2003. .
Bolton has managed just one goal in their last seven games and have only won two times on the road all year. They have, however, scored 6 goals in their last 2 matches, defeating Aston Villa 3-2 at home and then beating Birmingham 3-2 in the FA Cup last year.
11 Manchester United players are injured, including Lindegaard, Rafael, and Hargreaves.
The Wanderers have lost 15 of the last 16 against Manchester United, and their lone victory was a 1-0 win in 2007. United has won seven straight since that day, and should have no problem winning today.
