We talked about turnover differential in our last article in handicapping season win totals.  The premise is that luck tends to inflate and deflate a teams win over a course of a season.  Normally teams that had positive turnover differential one season tend to not be so lucky the next time around and vice versa.  We are looking to buck that trend again this season.  Once again here is that turnover table from last year.

Tampa Bay looks to avoid being swept by the NL West-leading San Diego Padres.

San Diego Padres at Tampa Bay Rays – Day

San Diego hammered out three home runs in picking up a 5-4 road victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.  The victory moved the team’s record to 19-13 on the road (+1,060), giving them the top record in the National League away from home.  First baseman Adrian Gonzalez continued his red-hot month of June, as he ranks first in the National League in batting average in June (.428).  The rest of the league is starting to realize that the Padres are not a fluke this season, with the team recording a 75-54 record since August 1, 2009.  This series is the first for San Diego on artificial turf and it doesn’t seem to be bothering them with victories in the opening two games

Two of the best interleague teams in all of baseball get set to square off in Game 2 of this series in front of a national audience.

Detroit Tigers at New York Mets

Detroit suffered a 14-6 blowout loss against the New York Mets in its first game of  nine-game road trip, after finishing a nine-game home stand with an 8-1 record.  “We made about as many bad pitches in one game as you could make,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.  The Tigers have dropped nine of their last 12 road games, as the pitching staff has produced a terrible 6.36 ERA over that span.   One member of the until that hasn’t been part of those troubles is closer Jose Valverde.  The Tigers will be in a solid position if he enters the game tonight, as he’s converted each of his last 16 save opportunities and tops all AL relievers with a 0.59 ERA.

The Nationals seek a three-game interleague sweep of the lowly Royals with their rookie phenom on the mound.

Kansas City Royals at Washington Nationals

Kansas City dropped its fifth game in a row on Tuesday night, falling 5-4 to the Washington Nationals in the nation’s capitol.  The current losing streak is the club’s longest under current manager Ned Yost.  The Royals are now 5-9 during interleague play this year, but are still 46-40 over the last five seasons against the National League.  OF Jose Guillen has been the lone bright spot during the team’s recent struggles, compiling a career-long 17-game hitting streak.  Being a big-sized road underdog of +225 to +250 is nothing new to the small town Royals, as the lines maker has placed them in this role for the fourth time already this season (2-1, +380).

The NBA Draft is just around the corner. The two teams that make up the Southern California Freeway Series are heading in opposite directions.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers left Boston without picking up a victory, after losing a 2-0 pitcher’s duel on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.  “They did many things better,” said Dodgers catcher Russell Martin.  “They’re a tough team to beat.”  The club returns to the Southern California area after a day off to face a team that swept them the previous weekend.  Manager Joe Torre’s club is 2-7 (-660) during interleague play this year and 16-26 (-1,330) the last three seasons.  Outfielders Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp hope to lead the offense on Tuesday night against a right-handed starter.  Ethier is batting .331 this season against righties compared to .295 versus southpaws, while Kemp has hit 10 of his 11 home runs against them.

College Football Weekly Recap June 14 – 20

Texas stops the bleeding; saves Big 12

The Texas Longhorn decided that the Big 12 is the better conference for them. Or maybe they just liked the money. Texas got an invite from the Pac-10 and said thanks – but no, thanks. They effectively stopped the bleeding before it really started. Yes, the Big 12 still lost Nebraska and Colorado, but the Longhorns’ decision kept the rest of the conference intact.
