Current Super Bowl Odds: A Look at the Long Shots

With Week 10 approaching, we are at about the halfway point of the NFL season. Some teams have disappointed while others have exceeded expectations. Let’s take a look at the current Super Bowl value picks, with odds according to Bodog.

Minnesota Vikings (30/1) Record: 3-5. It’s still hard to evaluate this Vikings team, but maybe the comeback victory against Arizona is just what this team needed. The Vikings still have four home games left, and if they catch fire, can still make the playoffs. Remember, this team almost made the Super Bowl last year.

Houston Texans (65/1) Record: 4-4. With the Texans at 4-4, this can be a tempting bet. And maybe at 65-1 odds, they are worth a look. But take a look at their upcoming schedule: @JAX, @NYJ, TEN, @ PHI, BAL, @ TEN. Those are some pretty tough games. It’s hard to imagine this fairly average Texans team to win more of those games than they lose. With that schedule ahead, it’s likely that the Texans will once again miss the postseason.

Miami Dolphins (80/1) Record: 4-4. Miami once again proved that they have trouble beating the upper tier teams. The Dolphins four losses have come ateams with a combined record of 24-8. The Dolphins can move the ball, but have trouble putting it in the end zone. They rank second to last in total touchdowns scored. The Dolphins also have a poor divisional record, so will most likely need to capture a wild card to make the playoffs. Still, at 80/1 they offer spectacular value.

Chicago Bears (50/1) Record: 5-3. It doesn’t seem like the Bears chances of winning the Super Bowl are that high,  especially after a poor showing coming off the bye against a winless team. Even so, the Bears have a respectable record and are only half a game behind the Packers for the division lead. It’s strange that there were high expectations for the offense after bringing in Mike Martz, but it is actually the defense keeping this team in games. The Bears defense ranks third allowed in total points, while the offense ranks 27th in points scored.

Seattle Seahawks (125/1) Record: 4-4. Well somebody has to come out of the NFC West, and the Seahawks seem like the best team right now. Even though they might not be as good as some of the other teams in the conference, the Cardinals weren’t as good either in 2008 and they made it to the big game. So who knows? The got destroyed by the Giants this past week, but at 125/1, why not?

Oakland Raiders (40/1) Record 5-4.The Raiders have impressed the past few weeks. With the win against the Chiefs, the Raiders are in great position going down the stretch to win the AFC West.  The Raiders do have a pretty tough schedule down the road, and although this is a much improved team, will not win the Super Bowl this year.

Overall: Out of these six, the Vikings and the Dolphins have the best shot at winning it all. If the Vikings put it all together then they can beat anybody in this league. The Dolphins have played well this year and the tough part of their schedule is coming to a close. The Seahawks and the Raiders are worth a look because the have a good chance of winning the division.
