It is the offseason but MLB is still making headlines. On Sunday the Chicago Cubs made the largest splash thus far, reeling in free agent Alfonso Soriano from the Washington Nationals. The details as being reported are a 8 year deal worth about 136 million dollars.
The deal is expected to be announced on Monday and is dependent on Soriano passing a physical. If completed, it would be the fifth largest contact in MLB history, behind, Arod, Derek Jeter, Manny Ramirez, and Todd Helton.
Soriano was the most sought after free agent in the market believed to be looked at by 8 different ball clubs. The Cubs beat all other teams to the punch before getting in a bidding war. The $17 million per year Soriano will receive makes him the highest paid Cubs player, surpassing the five-year, $73 million Aramis Ramirez received last week.
With Soriano and Ramirez now under contact, Chicago will boast one of the leagues best offenses. Look for the Cubs to look at bolstering the pitching in the coming weeks.
