Iowa State has dropped its first two games of the 2014 campaign, including a 32-28 setback to Kansas State as 11.5-point home underdogs last Saturday—getting out-gained by 405 combined yards in those contests.  The Cyclones are a disappointing 21-40 all-time in this series, which is important to consider when making your Week 3 college football predictions, but they’ve captured nine of the last 16 games in the in-state rivalry.  Iowa State is 3-4 SU and 5-1 ATS as underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points the last two-plus seasons.

The Cyclones have scored 28 of their 42 points in the second quarter this season, which can’t be ignored when looking over the college football odds page.  Iowa State quarterback Sam Richardson completed 21-of-30 passes for 185 yards in last week’s affair, while he totaled 260 yards through the air in last year’s meeting in this series.  Defensively, senior linebacker Jevohn Miller is the main player to watch, as he ranks second in the Big 12 Conference and 42nd nationally in averaging 10.0 tackles per game.

Iowa is off to a perfect 2-0 SU start despite failing to cover the number in each of those affairs, while it has also won five consecutive non-conference regular season games.  The Hawkeyes attempted 55 passes in Week 2 against Ball State, which marked the highest number of pass attempts for an Iowa team under longtime head coach Kirk Ferentz since the 2006 Outback Bowl.  Defensively, the unit is one of 13 teams nationally not to allow a rushing touchdown in its first two affairs.  Iowa is 11-6 SU and 5-12 ATS as favorites since 2012.

The Hawkeyes have used nine first-time starters in the opening two weeks, with three coming on defense, four coming on offense and two in special teams.  Iowa holds an all-time record of 55-33 against current members of the Big 12 Conference, while it has compiled a 23-13 record in this series when playing in Iowa City.

Sports bettors will likely back the Cyclones due to the Hawkeyes being 4-12 ATS at home the last two-plus seasons.
