AL Wild Card—One Month to Go

At the beginning of the 2006 baseball season, many pundits said that the Wild Card in the AL would come out of the Central Division. Although no one predicted that the Tigers would be in contention, forget about leading the division, many did foresee two of the three clubs presently in contention in the hunt—the White Sox and the Twins.

Of course the other team from the AL Central that was supposed to rip up the division—the Indians—are well out of any part of the AL race. Presently. The Twins lead the White Sox by 0.5 games in the Wild Card. Meanwhile, the Red Sox and Angels are 6 games out of first in the race for the best second-place team. The difference between those two teams is that the Angels have been on a tear, while the Red Sox have been spiraling out of control.

The Angels, White Sox and Twins all still also have a chance to win their respective divisions. However, the Red Sox are 9 games behind the first-place Yankees, which means they have little chance of getting into the playoffs unless they take the Wild Card.

Look for the Yankees, Oakland, which leads the West, and two of these three teams—Detroit, White Sox and Twins to be in the playoffs this season.
