The Florida State Seminoles are off to its first 0-2 start since 1989, and though the proud program boats talent, the loss of starting quarterback Deondre Francois in its opener may be too much to overcome. FSU fell last week despite being 14-point favorites against N.C. State as true freshman James Blackman drew the start.

This week, the Seminoles visit Wake Forest as mere 7.5-point favorites in ACC play. The game will air at 2:30 PM (CT) on ABC, with an over/under set at 47-points according to college football oddsmakers at bookmaker 5dimes.

Last week the Seminoles fell 27-21 to N.C. State, suffering a loss not dissimilar to its 2012 loss to the conference foe. The Wolfpack’s quarterback Ryan Finley threw for 230 yards and a pair of TDs, and the No. 12 Seminoles fell for the second time in 2017. It opened the year with a tough draw in losing to No. 1 overall Alabama, and at 0-2 its title hopes are firmly sunk, the loss of its starting quarterback having had plenty to do with it.

Blackman was not horrible in his first start, though, so the Seminoles are trying to draw encouragement from his 278 passing yards and overall decent showing. Even so, to find itself just 7.5-point favorites against a team like Wake has to serve as a major wakeup call here in Week 5. Two of the Seminoles first four games were postponed or cancelled, and the strange events of Hurricane Irma seem to have left a lasting cloud hanging over Tallahassee.

The Seminoles backfield has had marginal success, too. Cam Akers leads the team with 85 yards but averages under four yards per carry and No. 2 backs in the same boat with just 55 yards on 14 carries. Auden Tate has had a nice year at wide receiver with a team leading 11 receptions and team-leading 179 yards, but his two touchdowns are the totality of Florida State’s receiving TDs.

With Wake Forest well-aware of the Seminoles struggles, could we see another upset brewing in the ACC? It is all too easy to get down on FSU, but this easily could be its worst season in anyone’s memory, and no standouts on the roster threaten to really change that bleak outlook.

Wake Forest is 4-0 after having defeated Presbyterian, Boston College, Utah State and Appalachian State this season. John Wolford has thrown for 676 yards on 60.2 percent passing with eight TDs and zero interceptions. Wolford also leads the team in rushing with 269 yards on 47 attempts with three TDs. The Demon Deacons have 865 total team rushing yards and Arkeem Byrd, Matt Colborn and Cade Carney all have 100 yards or more on the season and a touchdown to each of their names.

The Wake offense has been successful, and its defense has held all opponents to 19 points or less, with three scoring 10 points or less. Granted, none of those schools measure up to the now unranked FSU program, but this game really could be the beginning of a huge stinker for the Seminoles because Wake has all the confidence after beginning its season with a quartet of ‘Ws.’
