A Little Golf, A Little Basketball

Of course I predicted that Miguel Angel Jimenez would be leading Tom Watson by one stroke after one round of the British Open. I mean, who didn’t? It was totally obvious. Bizarre. Only a couple of things made sense about the first round. Steve Stricker continued his hot play and is right in the mix. Camilo Villegas regained his lost form and is right there with Stricker. I’ll be annoyed if Villegas wins this thing – he’s been a choice for me in every major for the last couple of years, but I skipped over him this time because he has been so frustratingly ineffective. I think I’ll be safe, though. Oh, and what is it about Ben Curtis and this tournament? Bizarre.

It’s not time to panic about Tiger yet, but it’s getting close. It’s not just that he had a lousy round, but he looked terrible doing it. He was disastrous in the second half of the round, and his temper totally got the best of him time and again. And when was the last time that he topped a ball? I only rarely do that anymore, and I am lousy at golf. He certainly didn’t look like anything remotely similar to a 2/1 choice. I didn’t bet on him this time around, and I refuse to bet on him in a major again until he wins another one. I think that the majors are in his head right now – it’s hard to come up with another explanation for that mess of a round on a course that was prime to be eaten alive. He tees off again in the second round very soon, and I’ll need to see a miracle to believe in him again right now.

Very interesting occurrence at the Las Vegas NBA summer league yesterday. Second year undrafted Golden State player Anthony Morrow had a huge night, erupting for an all-time record 47 points against New Orleans. Morrow was 18 of 26 from the field, and was perfect from the free throw line in four tries. Morrow is a very interesting player. Despite not being drafted out of Georgia Tech, Morrow scored 37 points in his fourth NBA game last year. Overall, he averaged more than 10 points a game, and he led the league in three point percentage. In other words, the guy can shoot and he can play. Unfortunately, he’s a shooting guard, so he could be the victim of a suddenly crowded and talented back court with the Warriors. I hope they either find a way to make t all work or find somewhere else where he could play. This performance obviously won’t hurt his value.
