Tiger Woods PGA BMW Championship Betting Preview

Tiger Woods is the favorite on the BMW Championship betting odds board

The third leg of the PGA’s FedEx Cup playoffs rolls into Lemont, Illinois for the BMW Championship. Only the top 30 players in the standings advance to the Tour Championship in two weeks. After 2 weeks only 13 players are locked into the finale, and Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are not among those 13. The players who have secured their spots include Matt Kuchar, Charley Hoffman, Steve Stricker, Jason Day, Luke Donald, Martin Laird, Ernie Els, Hunter Mahan, Geoff Ogilvy, Justin Rose, Jim Furyk, Bubba Watson, and Ryan Palmer. Mickelson is in 14th spot so his spot is pretty secure unless he finishes dead last or something crazy this week. Woods’ situation is dicier as he is 51st place in the standings. he basically has to finish in the top 5 this week to qualify for the Tour Championship. Let’s take a look at some of the contenders and Dark horses this week to win.  PGA BMW Championship Betting odds courtesy of Bodog.

1. Tiger Woods (6/1) Surprisingly Woods is still the favorite despite not really being in contention at any tournament this year. He hasn’t been able to string together 4 good rounds in a  row, but has shown signs of life since his divorce was finalized just before the Barclay’s two weeks ago. This week at the Deutsche Bank he shot a 72 in the first round followed by three consecutive rounds under 70. that was good enough for a strong 11th place finish. the thing is, you really can’t bet on Tiger because you honestly have know idea what you are going to get from him week to week. The fact that he is a heavy favorite is due to the respect he garnered from being dominant for so long. The old Tiger might never show up again, or perhaps he turned the corner and will get his first win of the season this year.

2. Steve Stricker 12/1 Stricker is one of the most consistent players on tour. he has two wins and 8 top 10′s this year which has him third in the standings. He has a good shot of winning this week, but he is content enough just to finish in the top 10.

3. Phil Mickelson 14/1 Mickelson has been battling injuries all season including knee arthritis. aside from a win at the Masters he only has 5 top 10′s. as mentioned he should qualify for the Tour Championship easily, but his game may be in worse shape than Tiger’s.

4. Jim Furyk 18/1 After being disqualified from the Barclay’s for over sleeping and missing his tee time in the Pro-Am, Furyk dropped in the standings but will still qualify for the Tour Championship. he is like Stricker in that he is consistent with 2 wins and 6 top tens, good enough for 11th in the standings. He might be worth a play at 18/1.

5. Matt Kuchar (22/1) Kuchar has a commanding lead in the standings, leading Charley Hoffman by over 900 points. this is mainly due to ten top 10 finishes. Kuchar’s one win of the year came at the Barclay’s in a play-off two weeks ago. He is a good bet this week with good value at 22/1.

6. Adam Scott (22/1) Scott is in 15th position in the standings and should advance barring disaster. he has one win and 4 top tens. He might compete for the title this week, but finished in the top 20 is more likely.

7. Rory McIlroy (25/1) The young golfer from Northern Ireland is 29th in the standings, placing him firmly on the bubble to advance. He needs a good showing to secure his spot. he has 1 win and 5 top tens, which is remarkable considering he also plays on the European Tour. he could be a nice dark horse pick to win.

8. Luke Donald (25/1) Donald is 5th in the standings with 6 top tens and 0 wins. He won the U.S. Open last year, but hasn’t won since. he is unlikely to compete for the title this week, and just wants to stay consistent to keep his place in the top 5. The top 5 are guaranteed to win the FedEx cup with a victory at the tour Championship.

9. Dustin Johnson (28/1) Johnson is in 16th place in the standings with one win and 6 top 10 finishes. he is in a similar situation to Mickelson and Scott. he is pretty safe, and doesn’t need to gamble. he will be content with a toip 20 finish, and a top 10 will be gravy.

10. Jason Day (33/1) Day is 4th in the standings with one win and 5 top 10′s. two of his top 5′s came in the Barclay’s and the Deutsche Bank. I think he puts it together this week and is our pick to win the BMW. The young Australian is very talented and consistant.

Other notable players and their odds include: Zach Johnson (33/1), Geoff Ogilvy (33/1), Paul Casey (33/1), Hunter Mahan (33/1), Ernie Els (40/1), Retief Goosen (40/1), Charley Hoffman (50/1), Vijay Singh (80/1), Angel Cabrera (80/1), K.J. Choi (100/1), Anthony Kim (100/1) and Ryan Moore (100/1). Hoffman is 2nd in the standings and won the Deutsche Bank last week pretty handily. He is a good dark horse pick to win at 50/1.
