NBA Trade Deadline Approaching—No Kidd(ing)

The rumors abound regarding potential NBA trade as the deadline of February 22 at 3 pm ET is less than one day away. There are major problems involved in any big NBA trade. Salary cap restrictions, exceptions and exemptions help make scenarios extremely complicated, huge salaries don’t help and a paucity of big name talent makes things tight. If you’re looking to do something a lot more simple than trying to understand all of the ramifications of any of the potential team-altering trades then why don’t you do your 2006 taxes (long form) while taking the test for Mensa and studying quantum physics. Dallas is Mav-e-lous!

The Dallas Mavericks have lost nine games and won 44 (830%). In the Southwest Division of the NBA West Conference, they are nine games up on the second place San Antonio Spurs. As a comparison, the team with the second most wins in the NBA is the Pacific Division’s Phoenix Suns. The Suns are 39 and 13 (750%), putting them about 4.5 games behind the Mavs. (more…)

Louisville and Vanderbilt Make the Top-25 AP this Week!

The Louisville Cardinals (9-4 Big East, 19- 8 overall) and Vanderbilt Commodores (8- 4 SEC- East, 24- 3 overall) are nationally ranked at twenty and seventeen respectively. The Cards are in third-place in the Big East and Vandy is in second in the SEC-East. The big deal for Louisville is that they beat both Pittsburgh (11-2 Big East, 24- 4 overall) and Marquette (9- 5 Big East, 22- 7 overall) in one week and for Vanderbilt is that over the weeks they have knocked off numerous top-25 clubs, including the then number one Florida Gators. Vandy is Fine and Dandy

The unranked Vanderbilt Commodores (8-4 SEC/E, 18- 8 overall) moved into sole possession of second place in the SEC East by beating the number one ranked and SEC, East first-place Florida Gators (11- 1 SEC/E, 24- 3 overall). The 2006- 07 National Championship Gators were undefeated in the SEC until Vandy beat them easily 83- 70. The Commodores went into the locker room at halftime with a 35- 27 lead. Florida had been on a 17-game win streak until Vandy vanquished them.

Louisville Beats Nationally Ranked Marquette

The Louisville Cardinals (9- 4 Big East, 19- 8 overall) beat the 13th ranked Marquette Eagles (8- 5 Big East, 21- 7 overall) on a Jerry Smith three-point jumper as time expired, making the final score 61- 59. It’s the second time in one week that the Cards beat a nationally ranked team and a division opponent. Five days ago Louisville defeated the fifth ranked Pittsburgh Panthers. The Panthers are also the top club in the Big East. Rick Pitino’s young team has really come together. (more…)

Daytona Rule Enforcement Needs a Tune-up

NASCAR is about to kickoff it’s 2007 season and there has never been more negative press for this highly popular spectator sport. Five crew chiefs have been fined and suspended for cheating in either upping fuel efficiency or improving the aerodynamics of their vehicle.

Louisville is Hot—Can Marquette Cool them Down?

Rick Pitino’s Louisville Cardinals (8- 4 Big East, 18- 8 overall) took it to the Pittsburgh Panthers (10- 2 Big East, 22- 4 overall) on February 12, beating them handily 66- 53. The Panthers are in first place in the Big East and ranked fifth nationally. It was the first time that the Cardinals beat a nationally ranked club this season after four tries. (more…)

Celtics Need the Bucks to be their Valentine

The Boston Celtics are in big trouble. The members of this one-proud dynasty have lost 18 games in a row and the fact that Red Auerbach is not around to see his former team in this tailspin is the one positive in the entire mess. (more…)
