10 Quick Thoughts On A Sunday Evening

It’s about freaking time that the Lakers looked like the Lakers. If it took them that long to get their act together this time, though, then I really have to wonder how they will fare against a tuned up and focused Denver team. They still obviously have to be the favorite, but the margin of error is much smaller than it has been so far, and they have been far from powerful up to this point.

It seems like it has been about six months since the Cavs have played. The NBA scheduling is so strange in the playoffs.

Roy Halladay is a freaking machine. He had another big win today against the White Sox to move to 8-1. He is the most efficient, effective, reliable pitcher in the American League, and quite possibly in all of baseball. If he was playing somewhere other than Toronto he’d have what he deserves – more than the one Cy Young he has.

I was stunned, and thrilled, to see Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal on clay in the Madrid Open today. With the French Open coming up next week there is nothing that could have happened that would have made that tournament more interesting.

The Red Wings crushed the Blackhawks today. It was 5-2, but the game wasn’t nearly as close as the score. That’s what happens when old teams make it deep in the playoffs – experience matters more than anything now.

One incredibly strange story coming out of Tampa Bay today. The lineup card was filled in wrong – two players were listed at third base and none at DH. The card was signed, so that meant that the team lost the right to use the DH. For the first time since 1976, then, starter Andy Sonnastine was forced to hit – third in the lineup. He made the most of it – he went 1-for-3, reached another time on a botched sacrifice, and and had a run-scoring double.

It’s only the end of the first quarter as I write this, but I’m guessing that the Celtics certainly didn’t plan to start the deciding game of the second round at home by falling behind by 10 to Orlando. They have had some Mine That Bird-esque finishes in these playoffs, but it still doesn’t seem like a good idea to come out that flat early on.

For the third game in a row the Yankees won with a walk-off. They should quit playing the first eight innings – they are meaningless anyway.

The Rangers won their seventh in a row and are now leading their division by 4.5 games. I know that that sentence is true and it still makes no sense.

The Nationals are 11-25 – by far the worst record in the league. There is not a single reason to be optimistic about this team – except maybe the arrival of StephenStrasburg out of the draft. It’s hard to believe that a team can be this badly managed for this long. Pathetic.
