Last season, eight of the 11 teams in the Big Ten earned invitations to bowl games. However, just one of those clubs, the Iowa Hawkeyes, won their contest. This year, this conference will be just as competitive and hopefully more successful in the post-season.
The top of the heap looks to go to either the Penn State Nittany Lions or the Ohio State Buckeyes. Penn State puts an able linebacking squad on the field and a fine offense. Head coach Joe Paterno continues to be one of the best minds and motivators in the game. Ohio State has lost a step or two in its ground attack, but they still field one of the most talented and skilled teams in college football. Many feel that OSU will earn yet another BCS invite, but there’s a good chance that the Nittany Lions will finish on top this year.
The Michigan State Spartans have lost offensive power but they put a fine group of wideouts on the field and an excellent linebacking unit. This is a football program that continues to get better. Look for them to battle it out with PSU and OSU.
Juice Williams at QB and Arrelious Benn at WR are an amazing one-two punch. They make the Illinois Fighting Illini formidable. But there’s trouble on defense in the middle and the secondary and that will keep this club from being one, two or three in the Big Ten.
The Hawkeyes of Iowa put the best O-line in the league on the field but they have a tough schedule and lack a deep running game. The Michigan Wolverines possess an excellent receiving group and an all-around skilled and talented defense. For the Wisconsin Badgers to be successful, they’ll need to find a reliable QB who can protect the ball. For the Badgers, there’s depth in the RB and WR areas. The front four are weak.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers will open a new stadium aa head coach Tim Brewster continues to improve this team in order to make it a contender again. The road schedule, which includes Penn State and Ohio State, is tough. For the Northwestern Wildcats, it will be an uphill battle to earn a bowl invite, but it is possible. In order to put up winning numbers, they must field some effective wideouts and running backs.
The Purdue Boilermakers have a new coach—Danny Hope. Hope has given Purdue fans hope that this team can once again be in the national spotlight. But don’t hold your breath, there is a whole lot of rebuilding to do before that happens. The Indiana Hoosiers are without their playmaker Kellen Lewis. That’s the bad news. The defense has a dynamite pass rushing combo. That’s the good news. The final news—Indiana finishes last.
