2009-2010 ACC Basketball Preview
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is certainly one of the premier basketball leagues in the nation. It includes last season’s national champs, the North Carolina Tar Heels, and top programs such as the Duke Blue Devils and Maryland Terrapins. This is the way the ACC looks for the 2009- 2010 NCAA Basketball season.
How good are the North Carolina Tar Heels? They are certainly good enough to repeat as ACC and national champs. The freshman class, which includes top prospect forward John Henson, is one of the best in the country, and coach Roy Williams has the best defensive player in the conference in Marcus Ginyard. One of the ACC’s finest forwards is sophomore Ed Davis.
Second and third place in the ACC are tough to nail down but a vastly improved Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket team looks to be a solid second and a less powerful Duke Blue Devils club will step down a notch to third. If Duke had a better backcourt, they’d probably be predicted to finish second.
The Maryland Terrapins will benefit greatly from the return of senior guard Greivis Vasquez. The team is sound. The Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles will battle over fifth and sixth place. The Noles are without super player Toney Douglas, but they still possess a lot of talent. For Clemson, they’ll be hurt by the loss of two important three-point guys. Still, the Tigers welcome a highly rated frosh class.
Boston College Eagle’s coach Al Skinner is a master at making more out of less and he’ll put a competitive team on the court. The big problem for BC is the fact that they signed no freshman. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will look to sophomore Al-Farouq Aminu to carry the team, while the Virginia Tech Hokies are in need of more scoring to make an impact.
The final three teams on the list are the Virginia Cavaliers, Miami Hurricanes and NC State Wolfpack. Coach Tony Bennett comes in to turn around the Cavs program, while the Hurricanes welcome a strong class of recruits. NC State has to accumulate more talent to move up.
