Western Kentucky - San Diego Preview

West- Round Two
Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers (12) Vs. San Diego Toreros (13)
Sunday, March 23 @ 2:40 pm

It’s certainly an unlikely scenario that a 12th seed survives the meeting with a fifth seed and a 13th seed beats a fourth seed. But that’s how the upcoming match-up between the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers and the San Diego Toreros came about. And that’s one of the reasons it’s called March Madness.

Western Kentucky beat Drake in OT on a buzzer beating three-pointer hurled up by Ty Rogers. Rogers had three guys on him. He launched it as the clock went to 00:00 and when it hit, the Hilltoppers had beaten Drake 101 to 99. Wow!

Western Kentucky hit 54% from the field and 52% from downtown, which certainly helped them earn the victory. But where the Hilltoppers almost lost it was at the foul line. They sent Drake to the free throw line 29 times. Drake took 38 shots and hit 31. Western Kentucky took just 19 frees and hit 13.

Western Kentucky led in the second half until the 35-second mark when Drake tied it at 88. In OT, it looked as if the Hilltoppers were done. But Rogers changed that.

Rogers, a guard, notched 11 points total, including the big three. Guard Tyrone Brazelton led all scorers with 33. He also recorded 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Swingman Courtney Lee, who gathered 9 rebbies, put up 15 points. The bench also performed well for the Hilltoppers, with A.J. Slaughter getting 10.

It was also in OT that San Diego upset Connecticut 70- 69. This time it was De’Jon Jackson’s jumper with 1.2 seconds left that sealed the deal for the Toreros. This was a game where San Diego led most of the time. As in the Hilltoppers’ contest, San Diego outscored their opponents from the field and from downtown. But the Huskies put in 16 foul shots, while their opponents notched only 4.

San Diego saw swingman Gyno Pomare put in 22 points, forward Rob Jones hit for 14 and guard Brandon Johnson connect for 18. Jackson had only 4 points but two were the most important in the game.

The Hilltoppers gave the ball away too much against Drake. They had 22 turnovers and had 8 balls stolen. The Toreros are a sound defensive club. They stole the ball away from the Huskies 11 times. San Diego could take this one. Whatever the end result, we know one high seed is going to be in the Sweet 16.
