UNLV - Kent State Preview

Midwest- Round One
University of Las Vegas Rebels (8) Vs. Kent State Golden Flashes (9)
Thursday, March 20 @ 2:55 pm
Betting Line From Bookmaker: Kent State -1.5

In the MWC, the UNLV Rebels (12- 4 MWC, 26- 7 overall) finished two games out of first-place, which was won by BYU. In the MWC Tournament, however, UNLV beat BYU, taking the tourney championship. The second-place finish and tournament win were both surprises since the Rebels put so many inexperienced players on the court this season.

For UNLV, guard Wink Adams (16.4 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.1 APG) led the team in scoring. Adams hit 84% from the foul line and 35% from the three-point mark. Forward Joe Darger (11.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG) is also an avid point producer. He’s accurate from the foul line 84% of the time. Guard/forward Curtis Terry (10.9 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 4.9 APG) leads the Rebels in assists, and guard Rene Rougeau (9.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG) is the top rebounder, while also sinking 52% of his attempts from the field.

The Kent State Golden Flashes (13- 3 MAC, 28- 6 overall) took both the regular season and MAC Tournament titles. Kent State beat nonconference teams Illinois State and George Mason, while losing to Xavier and UNC. They enter the NCAA Tournament having gone 14- 2 in their last 16 games. The biggest victory for the club occurred on February 24, when Kent State beat the nationally ranked St. Mary’s 65- 57.

For the Golden Flashes, JUCO transfer Al Fisher (14.0 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 4.1 APG) has been a major find. Fisher, a point guard, led the team in points and assists. Along with hitting 41% from the field, he sank 83% at the foul line and 32% from downtown. Three other Kent State players have averaged double digits when scoring—forward Mike Scott (13.1 PPG), guard Chris Singletary (10.2 PPG) and guard Haminn Quaintance (10.0 PPG). Singletary is good 56% of the time and Quaintance hits 61% of his shots.

This is a tough one to call. Kent State has some dynamite shooters and is statistically better than UNLV from the floor and downtown. The Golden Flashes also have superior men up front. It will be a battle.
