North Carolina - Mount St Marys Preview
East- Round One
North Carolina Tar Heels (1) Vs. Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers
(16)
Friday, March 21 @ 7:10 pm
The North Carolina Tar Heels (14- 2 ACC, 32- 2 overall) proved to be as dominant as everyone predicted, losing only two games—one to Duke and the other to Maryland. The Tar Heels took both the ACC regular season title and the conference tournament crown. They are the number one team in the nation and the top seed in March Madness.
This team features all around fine play in both the front and backcourt. Forward Tyler Hansbrough (23.0 PPG, 10.4 RPG) is a double-double threat all the time. One of the best players in the country, he possesses both fine offensive and defensive skills. Point guard is ably manned by playmaker Ty Lawson (12.4 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 5.3 APG), while shooting guard Wayne Ellington (16.7 PPG, 4.3 RPG) is deftly accurate. Swingman Danny Green (11.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG) can shoot from the perimeter or take it to the basket.
The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (11- 7 NEC, 19- 14 overall) won the NEC Tournament, earning a NCAA berth. That’s the good news. The bad news is they have to play UNC in the first round.
The offense revolves around the guards. With point man Jeremy Goode (14.5 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 5.5 APG) providing solid leadership and fine scoring potential. Goode is an all around competitor, ably defending and averaging 2.0 SPG. Chris Van (14.3 PPG, 3.0 RPG) is a sound shooter, while G/F Will Holland (8.7 PPG, 3.5 RPG) can hit from outside and inside. Van is the team’s best foul and three-point shooter.
When you’re number one, everyone wants a shot at you. Mount. St. Mary’s gets the first try. Look for UNC to get an early lead and never look back.
