Saturday, March 29 @ 9:05 pm

If there’s a team in the tournament that continues to play as if it’s destined to be champs, it’s the UNC Tar Heels. The Heels have won by 39, 31 and 21 points. With 8:55 left in the first half of their Sweet 16 contest, North Carolina went ahead of the Washington State Cougars 15- 14. They never looked back.

The Tar Heels played tough “D,” holding the Cougars to a 32% success rate from the field. UNC grabbed 42 rebounds to WSU’s 28. Swingman Danny Green had three steals while forward Alex Stephenson blocked three shots.

Forward Tyler Hansbrough led all scorers with 18 points and all rebounders with 9. Danny Green was lethal from downtown where he scored 9 of his 15 points. Ty Lawson hit for 12 points. Guard Wayne Ellington and forward Deon Thompson took down 8 rebounds each.

The Louisville Cardinals took it to number two seed Tennessee, beating them 79- 60 to advance to the Elite Eight. Once again, it was defense that won the day. The Cards out rebounded the Vols 42- 24. They held Tennessee’s field goal success rate to 34%, while sinking 52% of their shots.

The Cardinals featured five players in double digit scoring, including swingman Earl Clark’s 17. Clark dominated the boards with 12 rebounds. Guard Jerry Smith put in 13 points, hitting 2 of 3 from the arc. Andre McGee put up 13 points, while notching 3 assists. Forward Terrence Williams and center David Padgett grabbed 8 rebounds each while scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino pushes his club to play tough as nails defense, which can really put teams off their game plan. This battle versus UNC is the ultimate test for Louisville. To succeed, the Cardinals need to take better care of the ball. The Vols took the ball away 11 times. North Carolina is playing near perfect ball. There’s a big battle brewing under the boards.
